C30: NOISY MAST?!?!?!

Hello Everyone,Well this past weekend was the first offical outting with the NEW, to me, 1980 C30. While docked, I noticed alot of clanning(?) noise at the mast and assumed it was the metal halyards banging against the mast. I tied them back away from the mast so they would not contact and thought I was done.....then the noise started again. I looked up the mast and nothing was touching then noticed the sound was coming from within the mast. Something was banging away inside....Any ideas what it could be??? I have a steaming light and an antennea at the top. Could the wires be loose and make that much noise???Thanks for the input.Paul

Internal wires

It's pretty common for the internal wiring to clang around inside the mast. Check the archives for possible fixes.LaDonna

Peanuts...

You can put packing peanuts down your mast to stop the noise. Just don't use the dissolving kind!

Clanging within the mast...

My 1984 C30 has a long piece of PVC pipe within which the electrical wires run to the top of the mast as well as to the spreader lights. I assume that your halyards, though, run internal to the mast also. Does the sound appear to be metal-on-metal? Maybe a loose bolt on the rigging?

Pipe insulation

We had the same problem and used pipe insulation before we stepped the mast this year. If you buy the kind with a slot you can actually put it around the antenna wire and stuff it up. We only made it to the spreaders but it stopped the noise.
