I am looking at a mid 70's C30 that needs an engine transplant. What are the various configurations of engines/transmissions that have been in the Catalina 30 since production started? Would a 15 hp diesel be sufficient or would it leave me underpowered? What have you got in your boats and does it do the job for you?

gets the job done

Rick. IMHO you will need about 20 to 25 hp. to be comfortable in a tide or where the current is strong or the water runs near a jetty, ect. I have a Universal 24hp and at times in a close situation like a draw bridge I wish I had more. I guess if you know for sure that you will only encounter still water almost anything will get you along after a fashion. I also enjoy the little extra power when docking or backing down.

We have a Yamar 2GM20 15 HP in our boat and it has served us very well in fairly rough conditions. Most notable test was when we were cought in a very bad storm with 30 knot winds on our nose and strong current flowing against us, we were able to maintain just about 5.5 knots motorsailing at 2600-2800 RPMs (we get about 6.5 knots in calm weather).

Gail: Question for you

Hey Gail, I've got the 2GM20F, too. What do you have for a prop? You're getting better performance than I am. Also, how did you modify your dinette seats to allow for the extra height the Yanmar engine needs? Do you have any pictures? Email me at allens@mathworks.com if you can. Thanks, Allen s/v Drambuie, Hull 632

Allen/Gail

Allen, have you had problems or would just like a little more power? Gail, did you have to modify to fit the engine in as Allen suggests, if so I'd like to know more... For both of you... What type of transmission have you got and what about the prop?

Lets see, the Yanmar 2GM20 was installed in the late 80s by a PO and I don't see where any modifications have been made to the dinette area (l-shaped) and there aeems to bee adequate clearance under the dinette seats (about 1.5-2"). I figure they completely redid the fiberglass engine beds so there would be enough room and wood-blocked it for alignment as is standard. The tranny is a Kanzaki I don't have the model number at the house, and we currently have a Martec fixed 3-blade 14x12 prop which brings the boat up to speed nicely, but causes far too much cavitation under the boat while under power (poor clearance) and too much drag under sail. Spoke with the Martec people at the boat show last Sunday and they advised we consider changing to the 2-blade 14x14 folding prop to compliment the output of the Yanmar 2GM20(the 3-blade folding or feathering wouldn't have enough clearance from the keel). Hope this helps.
