C27 to Cabo?

I want to go on the Baja HaHa cruisers rally (100+ boats) to Cabo from San Diego in Oct-Nov 2001. I was planning on trying to get berth on a larger boat, but several of my club buddies have been telling me I should think about taking my Enigma (C27, OB model, std rig). I've done all the recommended upgrades (spreader brackets, lower shroud u-bolt replacement, etc.,etc.-about 90% of the changes Childress did for his circumnavigation). I went as crew on the '99 Baja Ha Ha on a larger boat, so have the experience, and think the C27 would be a fair compromise. I could have fun sailing down, and trailer the boat back up the Hiway from Cabo. Biggest concern I see is enuff fuel for a 2-stroke OB engine, and maybe carrying enuff H2O. I can carry about 18-24hrs of fuel for motoring, and probably 20gal water. Enough of both to do it w/3 crew, but little room for error. Any suggestions/ideas?

Sounds like a blast! I've never done the Baja HaHa so don't know if they stop along the way but if it's a rally, they probably do, right? Ensendada, Turtle Bay, Cabo? If they do, you should be able to get gas & water with no problema along the way but will it be enough? I guess you'll be forced to sail a lot to avoid any potential problems. Conserve water. Bring lots of jerry jugs for extra water & fuel. If this is something you foresee doing again or for an extended period, maybe think about a small watermaker?? Bring lots of food you don't need to cook with freshwater. Don't drink a lot of alcohol along the way - you'll just get more dehydrated, thus consuming more water. Bring a spinnaker. Isn't there a prevailing northerly that time of year? The nice thing about your boat compared to bigger ones is that you'll move along much easier in light winds. Let us know how the plans are going - sounds like too much fun!! LaDonna

To LaDonna

The Baja Haha is a cruiser's rally that leaves San Diego about 11/1. Stops are Turtle Bay (360mi-3 days) Bahia Santa Maria (another 240mi-2 days) and then to Cabo (180mi-2days). 7 days underway, with stopovers adding another 4-5 days. Supplies (fuel/H2O) are available at Turtle, but Santa Maria is an anchorage w/no facilities. Watermaker not an option, since I am an OB engine (not sufficient power generation). NWesterlies are the norm, and I have (2) spinnakers, so LONG!!LONG!! 'chute runs are a given. Most of the boats are larger (35-60 ft) so I'd be among the slowest. BUT a Coronado 27 (w/IB diesel) did it in '99 when I went w/no problem. Except for dragging anchor at the Cabo anchorage, and ending up on the beach... You may frequently have to motor overnite, so fuel is a concern, especially burning 1.2GPH at 5.4knots on the OB. I went in 99 on a Newport 41, but a C27 with a couple other guys would be FANASTIC if we could arrange it all! Peter

C72s

Rob said a couple of C27s did the HaHa this last year. Maybe an old issue of Latitude 38 will have the details. Have fun! LaDonna

La Donna's right

Pete, We went on the Ha-Ha this year and it was a blast. Somebody, and I forgot has name did go this last year on a Catalina 27. I didn't hear that they had any real issues. Last night out going into cabo got a little blustery we were on a big Cat and we got pushed around a little but other wise it was great. If you've got the huevos to do it in a 27 I say go for it. Have fun Hugh

Crew...Maybe

Got a fair amount of interest from members of my Club (Stockton Sailing Club, Stockton CA, www.stocktonsc.org) I figure 3 total crew would be about right. Been cruising the NorCal coast the past 8 years with 3 for 10 days at a time, and 3 seems to be the max w/o crowding. Also (as mentioned) concerned w/water stores. At usage of(+/-) 1 gal/day/person, you can't take too many crew if you can't bring a watermaker (I can't). BUT no decision yet made, other than I AM GOING TO CABO IN 2001! It may be as crew on another boat, or may be on my 27, but I'M GOING! But on my 27, on its own bottom... TOO COOL! Peter

Baja Ha-Ha

Thank you for your response. I have been looking at cat.27 or 30 for same use , can't decide would appreciate your input. Last year I ran ad in 48 north for 6 months and received zero response, talked to Profligate delivery cap't in puerto vallarta and he said crew party was the place to sign on, it seem's like a close schedule to do it that way. This time will be different. T.Y. john

Check Dec or Jan Latitude 38

There was a lengthy article in the Dec. or Jan Latitude 38 on this year's and a 27 was among those listed. I've already passed my copy on, so don't have it available, but the article was very lengthy and gave lots of info on the conditions, etc. Sounds like a blast!
