"WindSong" is patient with me. She wants her reef lines rigged properly in her mainsail, and she won't leave the slip unless I do that. Me? I'm a crass beginner, willing to honor her wishes. Two years ago, I removed her mainsail, and due to other maintenance needs, have forgotten how to re-rig her reef lines. Apparently, she doesn't care about all I've done for her.Briefly as possible, her mainsail leech has an upper and lower reefing grommet. On her boom, aft, are two Schaefer blocks on the starboard side, each with a place to secure a reef line. Forward on the boom, starboard, are two cleats. The larger one is aft of the smaller. One line hangs from the aft Schaefer block; another hangs from the forward Schaefer block. The line on the aft block is larger than the one that hangs from the forward block. The aft block lines up with the lower grommet on the sail; the forward block lines up with the upper grommet. Ergo, loop the aft line under the boom, up thru the lower grommet & down to the aft block and forward to the aft larger cleat. Loop the forward line up thru the higher grommet & down to the forward block & forward to the forward cleat.Problem: The forward line to the upper grommet, when so rigged, is too short to secure to the forward boom cleat, but it was ok when I had unrigged it. Could it be that I did not loosen either the boom vang nor the mainsail sheet when bending on the mainsail? That the boom was too secure, after the mainsail was raised, so that it did not rise sufficiently to allow the necessary slack to secure the forward reef line to the forward cleat? What am I missing, here?
