C27 Draft?

In discussion with a friend reference his latest purchase, a 1975 C27, he mentioned that the surveyer listed the draft as 41/2 ft (54 inches). After I pointed out that a 4 foot draft is specified on all Catalina documentation, we contacted the surveyer but he was adament that his measurement was correct. As luck would have it, my 1980 C27 was sitting on it's trailer in my driveway waiting for the ice to breakup, you can imagine my surprize when it to measured 41/2 feet of draft. (measured from waterline to bottom of keel) Can anyone explain the extra 6 inches? Are we measuring incorrectly, are all tape measures north of 49 faulty, or has Catalina been indulging in a cruel joke?

Interesting!

I also always assumed that the draft noted in the owner's manual was accurate. That's a very useful piece of information as we're expecting a major drought this summer and water levels will be VERY low. LaDonna

Depends on the weight.

I think an outboard/tiller model would draw 4ft. Load it down with diesel, wheel, extra batteries, large holding tank, etc. and it has to draw more. My c27 has all the above plus a large CNG tank, refrigeration, and lots of ground tackle. I figure it draws 51 inches.

Always check yourself

I read somewhere, some time ago that the manufacturer's specs are often wrong on many boats. When I read this I checked my '85 27 and also found it to be 41/2 feet. Glad I did because Lk. Michigan has been so low as of late.

I don't know Squat . . .

If we figure 4.5 feet of draft for a heavy (liveaboard type) C-27, what should we factor in for squat when underway? Nick (Who can't throw a book away) . . . "Julia Bell" #86

41/2 ft Squat

Nick the 41/2 feet that I indicated is for an outboard model with no fuel, water or other heavey items on board. I would thinkit would be safe to add a couple of inches if I was loaded for long range cruising.

The waterline on the boat may....

... not be the waterline in the water. Where you tape the bottom paint is usually above the actual water line isn't it? So if there are three inches of bottom paint showing, is the draft now 4 1/4 feet? Maybe it was incorrectly painted. Shouldn't it really be measured in the water?

Actual waterline

Nice thought Joe, but I measured from the bottom of the keel to the line where she sits in the water with minimal load. This is about an inch below the factory waterline. Whatever way you look at it, there's still six inches more than Catalina indicates.

So this question should really be directed to...

...Frank Butler and the design team at Catalina Yachts, because none of us has come up with an adequate explanation for this contradiction. Okay, "Echo Gulf", you construct the petition, I will sign it. Let it be known.... The truth MUST come out.
