To me the inside knowledge about C&C's is key. Just where is the juncture of the keel with the stub...at the hull or does the stub end 6-12 inches below the hull. I looked at a boat where the latter was true, but there was still cracking at the juncture of the stub with the hull. I walked away, as it definitely indicated a weak design and, in that case, there was further damage aft indicating a severe grounding had occurred. Did you ask the owner if he made any insurance claims related to a grounding? I'd also walk around the dock...some of his dock mates might know too.

Rebuilding the sump and sump to hull connection is expensive since the repair has to be done from inside the bilge and outside. Recently saw the same vintage C&C with a $14,000 repair bill. Getting to the affected area from the inside is where all the expense isw. Pesky things like stringers and bulkheads are kind of in the way. Good luck!

Well I just spoke with another 2 former C&C employees. When they saw the photos they initially said it had been grounded. But after reading the surveyors comments they reconsidered their stance and said it was a bad fairing job that’s falling apart. They said the guy who did the survey was in charge of the hull and fiberglass and that his the expert and should not doubt for a second his assessment. So i guess looks can be deceiving.

The only way to know for certain is to put a grinder against it and have a look at the glass. I doubt that the owner will permit you that and will doubtless not do it for you. If you go back in November it may "look" perfect.

We should talk. I have 1984 37 which I race and sail hard. I pulled the boat is January and found a crack around the keel, about 2 feet from the front on each side. We discussed this with the yard and I learned the keel bolts should be tightened annually or in my case about every quarter. I again found the crack on the starboard side about a foot long and I am trying to determine if there is a bolt under the mast. I do not think so, at least one I must tighten. I will be diving the boat before my next race and repair the crack with Z-Spar. I will look again in three weeks to see if there is any movement. Contact me to discuss your concerns...

Did you purchase the C & C? What was the outcome with the former C & C employees? Did they work there before the company changed hands (the current company does not have anything to do with the former-just name)? Please follow up, I would like to discuss my keel with them possibly, thanks...
