I have a '76 Catalina 30 which has a leaking sink drain thru-hull. I'll either replace the glassed in pipe with a mushroom thru-hull or possibly just plug the hole and reroute the hose to the bilge. Any comments on which is better. I like the idea of plugging the hole, but am not sure of the proper way.

Hi Brian: I would recommend that you replace the thru hull. Putting sink water into the bilge will cause odors from the inevitable bits of food and gunk that will end up there. Talk to your local boat yard or West Marine, or BoatUS store to find out how to install a new fitting. Not a hard job, and not that costly. Dave S/V Westwind

Drain Fix

I have had the same problem and with one of the holes I just retapped the hole with a 1/2" pipe tap. Then replaced the pipe with a good thread sealant. It still works great with no leaks. The other was damaged a bit so I filled the old hole with epoxy and then re drilled and tapped. It works just fine now as well.
