We will be sailing in the BVIs in May (12-20). Looking to find the estimated wind speeed and direction for that time of the year. I have a rookie crew and I want them to feel comfortable as I select a route based on the winds. Thanks

15 out of the East

Below is a link to that pilot chart mentioned previously. I just learned to look at the things and it looks like the wind blow force 4 (13-18 knots) 60% of the time, with the majority of the rest of the time from SE and NE. We chartered down there last May and I would say we had 10-15 knot winds all week with some periods of 5 knots, but none really of 20. Mostly out of the East, but I seem to remember one morning with some westerly winds? Nice easy sailing. We had some rain and small storms for the first 4 days, but then the sunshine took over - that has probably nothing to do with the season? The temperatures were nice and things were not too crowded. May seems like a good time to go. Seems better than January with the "Christmas Winds" that you hear about.

If you look at the Island layout

and figure the wind's usually from the east, then half of the time you HAVE to be going "uphill."

Prevailing east winds

Just returned yesterday. East winds prevailed at speeds of 14-18 knots, 4-6 waves with NNE swells. We were reefed all week. Made for some fun sailing but choose your anchorage wisely. Mooring balls filled up quickly by 3pm, so keep that in mind, we sometimes picked up the mooring ball early in the day, leaving the dinghy behind so we had piece. Enjoy!
