Hey guys. My question is about buying a used sailboat. So I have no sailing experience, but really want to get into it!
I have an opportunity to purchase a beautiful, well maintained 1978 Oday 25 swing keel.
I live in Michigan so it's pretty much past boat season. I would hate to pass this boat up to not see another for this price and all accessories and preventative maintenance already done to it.
But it is crazy to buy a boat that athletically looks great without putting it on water first?
The seller seems like a wholesome genuine person, with a long list of new and replaced items, including standing rigging, he reinforced or put on competley new chainplates on the bulkheads, newer 9.9 electric start with alternator Honda outboard, good sails conditions, new cushions and a whole lot of rigging and set up. Tandem axel trailer looks nice too!
It's a great looking deal but I'd hate go empty my bank on something that would turn on me in the spring...
I guess my question is, if you found a boat that looks great, you can tell the owner took pride in owning it, and was in your price range, would you buy it without sailing on it first?
I look forward to any responses!
