Buying a C30

During the last 5 months, I've posted questions about buying a used C30. I'm in the process of closing on a 1980 C30 w/A4. I got a presurvey price of 22k from the owner. Following the survey last week, I've worked the price down to 18k due to the following problems: 1. Deck delamination on from port stachion 1 to 3. 2. Slight rotting of top of port bulkhead attachment near 1st bolt in the head. 3. Water leaking to aft berth, from unknown area. 4. Poor wiring arrangement of nav instruments. 5. Old interior cushions. These are the biggest items in importance. The A4 engine is in excellent shape, as is the hull condition and the sails are in good shape. Otherwise some cosmedics and cleaning. Does 18k seen to be a good price? I like the boat. Also, in order to get the port deck delamination fixed, the deck would need to be cut, old core material removed, replaced and resealed. Any ideas on posible cost? And what would be involed in fixing the port bulkhead rot? I know replacing the bulkhead on a C27 is easier to do. Any ideas? Thanks, Jim Stocks

If You Like Her!

Jim, Generally, the $18k looks like a fair price for her age and engine type. Besides what you've noted, have you seen her bottom? If not, perhaps the price could be lowered even more if she has blisters or at least needs to have new bottom paint. This might be another couple thousand or more dollars depending on what you find. Some other components that may support the price are wheel steering, propane stove and oven, auto pilot, air conditioning, radios, depth finder, bimini, safety gear, number and types of bilge pumps and ground tackle for instance. Of the items you listed, the deck delamination may be your biggest fix-up, which if you are handy, you should be able to do it yourself. Check out Don Casey's book "This Old Boat". The port bulkhead rot, if it's minor, probably can be fixed with a combination of Git-Rot for the dry rot and a substantial lamination of marine grade 1/2" plywood to both sides with the chain plate thru bolted with back-up plates. The leak is one I'm also trying to find on our craft. The wiring and cushions go with her age and become part of the fun of fixing her up the way you would like her to be. By the way, we have the Atomic 4 also and it runs great. Ours is raw water cooled. Does yours have a heat exchanger? Also, if it isn't already on there, add a Racor fuel/water separator. They really work! Keep us all posted on what you decide. Rod

Price and Aft Berth

We paid $17,500 in So. California for our '81 with minor deck compression at mast and minor blistering. Be sure to check the compression post and the wooden mast step/block in the bilge for any softness/rot. I found that rain water was leaking in around the hatchboards down to the forward end of the aft berth, perhaps that's your source? Also be sure to check out your wheel steering is equipped -- I had to rebuild mine 1 mo. after purchase due to broken fittings that were not picked up in the survey. Enjoy her! Checks Out

The boat has a good bottom on it. No blisters. It also has wheel steering, wind, depth, and speed instruments. Also has a dodger which may need repairing and a full boat cover. Other than some home-made looking dorado ports, the PO didn't do much to upgrade the appearance of the boat. Jim

C-30 Purchase

I lookeD for about a year before I purchased "Faith". Out here on the West Coast there are many C-30s on the market and I just had to be patient to find the right one. If I saw any delamination I would run! (There are many easy fixes, but they are only a bandaid. To repair properly the glass would have to be removed and the core replaced). Rotting bulkheads would also make me shy away from a boat. I waited and looked at probably 30 boats until I found MY boat; $19.5 for an '80 with new M-25XP (less than 75 hrs.), spinnaker, fairly new roller furler, and all the other goodies that make up the PERFECT BOAT! No rot, no leaks, no rust.

'79 Tall Rig w/ Bowsprit

Jim, My wife and I purchased a '79 tall rig in February and have named her "Cg2". Her hull was in fantastic condition, bottom in good shape except maybe 6 "cosmetic" blisters, wheel steering installed a year earlier, 11 HP diesel w/ recent overhaul. The boat smelled GOOD below, no mildew or diesel smell. Teak looked good. She needed a new head and stove. I planned on purchasing all new running and standing rigging for any boat I bought in this age bracket unless it was done very recently so this wasn't an issue. Same for sails. She came with lines led aft and extra large jib sheet winches. Rigged for spinnaker w/nice pole (although I won't use it too much in SF bay). The original chocolate brown/beige striped cushions were in good shape but, again, not an issue because we planned on redoing any older interior. Deck is an old beige/yellow but we will paint it. All in all a very sound boat. No rot, no mast/post compression problems, no de-lam. Slight leak in the head port that will get a new hatch. Both bulkheads have lifted a little and I plan on replacing them eventually reinforcing them and the chainplates. Electronics were limited to Loran, VHF, depth and speed. Fine. No hot water or shower (which also was fine for us). After looking at many C30's we felt this boat was right. We negotiated the price from $24,000 to $20,000. Subsequently we have invested $12,000 in sails (main and jib), stove, head, all new running and standing rigging, jib furler, new interior upholstery, bottom job and various other "minor items" such as new "seacocks" (actually they are "ball valves on pipes"), etc. We feel secure sailing on the bay knowing what we really have, and the C30 is a great boat for playing on while still in the marina! buying C30

I echo all of the good comments in previuos posts. We bought our 1982 C30 in 9/97 for 21k. Here on the Chesapeake the price you quoted sounds high!

1979 TRBS

I bought my boat in Feb of 2000. I have an A-4. GPS, Plotter, Autopilot, spinnaker and 5 jibs. The boat had been out if the water for 3 years and was filthy. I paid a lot less for it. I got mine for 12,500. I would try to get the price down some more.
