Burst, Main Sail Clew

I have a 2002 H-356 with the original UK sails. Today while sailing in 18kt winds, the mail sail clew blew out and set the sail a flapping. Specifically, the three web straps that attach the main sail clew block wheel to the outhaul line ripped apart - all three. I have a furling main sail and these straps are exposed to the sun for 6 months a year. Is it common for these to give out after four years on the water? Is there an "emergency method" to attach the outhaul after all straps break like this? Thanks Dave

yes it happens

Mine is in in the sun year round and it popped last summer, mine is a 2003 356. I beleive the straps are not uv protected (why I don't know). You can have them replaced with some that are uv protected and it would be a good idea to have the sunbrella cover go over them instead of under them as the factory ones are. I know of no temporary fix, I will track this thread to see any other ideas posted. Check the clew on the jib, it can't be far behind. Good luck

My Jib

Did the same thing on my 23. I had to sew new straps in..I did it myself. The clew is really hard to sew through all that material!

Me too.

About 6 weeks ago I had the same problem on my 2000 H410. After the main broke we just tied it up round the boom and then 15 mins later the jib did the same thing. Thanks to Yanmar we made it home! Had all straps replaced by Doyle and were in business again a day later.

Sails

After 3 seasons on my first boat's sails, I brought them to Doyle for cleaning and inspection. Both sails (UK) needed just a bit of restitching at the corners. This past winter I brought my sails to Doyle, once again after 3 seasons (new boat, Doyle sails) for cleaning and inspection. No stitching required this time. Bottom line - a little PM goes a long way.

UK sails

Well I quess I have to add my experience too with a blown out clew on my Hunter 386 (2004). We had just unfurled the mainsail and we're getting ready to set the lines when the clew straps "popped". I rerolled the sail and with the help of Yanmar returned to port. The following day, I removed the sails and took it to a local sail shop. The sail shop didn't think highly of the UK straps and resewed four UV straps to the clew. UK sews on three, one each for each slit. My sail shop used the center slit and doubled up on it. Every thing has been fine since. When it comes time to replace my sails, I'm going with Doyle's vertical batten roller mainsail.

2003 456 blew out too

just bought a 2003 passage 456 and on the second day sail the clew for the main and the head of the roleerfuling headsail went, took them to the sailmaker who replaced the blown straps with spectra tapes. The sails that come with the boat are are lowest denomenater sail cheapest mone can buy.
