Build a Better Boat Hook?

Modern trekking poles have these snap type fasteners. They would be great on boat hooks, but I've never seen one done that way. They beat twist locks for sure. Maybe a manufacturer is listening.

Interesting. You see those on tripods as well.
I wonder if the bump would be annoying when sliding along a lifeline. I bet it would be. I bet they'd get broken off, but I don't know.

I found an aluminum extendable pole at a hardware store .../QUOTE]

It that the one that is a commercial-grade paint roller pole? Guys in our club use them, and they seem to last pretty well. A 40-footer uses them.

the boat hook head for the shurhold works well - I also have the gaff and net heads and they also are handy for rescuing things dropped over by the grandkids

Boat hooks is something we really and we use ours pretty much every time we go out boating.
Shop around for a good boat hook nothing fancy or cheap and get one that only slides out one setting and test it out in the store making sure it is easy but strong but not too heavy.
I use a setup that holds a loop of dock line onto the boat hook but pops off easy it clips on and off by punching on to end of pole so my wife can put the loop line on a pole at the dock with the end of line on a cleat on our boat and I usually have a second boat hook with another line to grab the stern while she is at mid ship cleat and than I will help secure boat at dock and the idea is to getting a line on dock and secured to boat before any wind or motion moves our boat too far from the dock.

The funny thing is... I don't think I have ever dropped a boat hook. Glasses, tools, and hats, sure, but never a boat hook.

Even funnier, I have seldom lashed one down and never stow one. With the cats we just tossed them on the tamp and they seemed to stay., even in foul weather. On the tri we just lay them inboard of the kayak.

Here's how we solved the boathook storage issue on our previous boat. It hooked into a bungee loop up on the backstay and the butt end of the handle was held against the stern rail stanchion with another bungee loop. This worked like a charm for years and kept the hook close by and ready to use.

This is where I keep mine on my H260. Since i back in I’ve told all of my dock neighbors to use it if they need it.
I share the same frustration as everyone else who has trouble with using it.

Interesting discussion. We rarely use our hook. To grab a mooring I pull the stern to the ball, string a line through then walk it to the bow. To come into the dock we use a bridle that I learned from Jssailem and it works flawlessly. No more bounding off the boat to get the lines secure.

The normal use for us recently has just been to pull up crab pots, and we don't crab often.

nice storage ideas. We have a boat neighbor who used pieces of PVC pipe to the same end. Slide the handle up through, then drop the hook down into a capped piece. they have tied to a shroud, but backstay is just as good.

we have one - and it really works, even though it looks like it violates the laws of physics! but, at over $100, do you trust your crew to keep it n the boat?

We don't use ours very much, only to retrieve hats that have gone swimming and when on vacation. We need to go through 5 Seaway locks the the boat hook is very useful for keeping the boat off the wall.

Cheers

I have three really beat up ones aboard. Including one I found while diving LOL. I think ours have only ever been used for retrieving hats and sunglasses(with floaties).

We keep our dock lines aboard, so when I dock her, I spin her in the canal and approach the dock with her in neutral, and as the port side nears the dock, I loop the bow spring line on the central cleat on the dock by hand and let her continue to drift forward until it catches and pulls me tight into the dock. I then climb onto the dock with the stern line in hand, and make her fast. If we have a strong west wind, I sometimes have to shift her back into reverse gear to let the prop walk move the stern closer to the dock. If I had a strong northwest wind this might not work, and I would have to use the boat hook, but in 3 years at this dock, this has never occurred.
