Instead of a telescoping system, have you considered building something similar to the one in the picture? Simpler and you can paint it.

I had seen that system where the extension is a different hitch bar that slides out and I like it alot. The reason I went with the the telescoping system is that the telescoping bar on my trailer goes far enough back to land on top of a cross beam allowing for another point of contact and place to secure it for towing.

I got thinking more about the flexing of how I got it mounted. I am going to go to Tractor Supply and get some long bolts and land them under the main hitch assembly to end the flexing. It would not flex with the extension bar all the way back on the cross beam but would once it was pulled forward..

I am about to pull it all off and do the cold galvanize but it is all in place. The third securing bolt goes through three inches of wood and then is locked into a cross member. This is not going anywhere while under tow. Three hour straight of smacking a wood chisel gets old!
