stern pulpit port forward stanchion snapped at the top of the base; going to remove and have repaired with a weld.

question is assuming this is from wear and age ('81 cat 30) is it possible and make any sense to have "preventative" welds done on the other stanchions? is there anyway to test the strength of each?

thanks

Probably a bad weld from the factory. Inspect the others carefully, looking for cracks.. if you find some, then repair those. The welder will have "dye penetrant" for inspection, ask him to check them all.

For a dye penetrant test kit, use diesel fuel and liquid white shoe polish. Paint the suspect with diesel fuel and allow to soak for a few minutes and wipe dry. Then paint on the white shoe polish and allow that to dry. if there is a crack the fuel oil will stain the shoe polish.
