Broken Steering Linkage

I am cruising Desloation Sound, and have found today after returning to my 1978 30, anchored @ Savary that my steering is broken. upon further investigation, i found the shaft from the rack and pinon of the pedistal to the rudder linkage has bent and broken off at the thread inside the gear system. i can get a replacement part made locally, good enough to get me home, but do not know the best way to continue. Having not found the manual for the pedestal i am having trouble determining the best way to extract the broken piece and replace the shaft. i may be able to drill a hole in the broken piece in question to allow some grip so that i can just unscrew the piece. alternatively, i believe i can drop the bottom of the pedestal off by disconnecting the chain from the wheel and removing the bolts on the bottom of the pedistal, but this seems like a big task, but this seems to be the only access to the area in question. is there a simpler method to fix this? Does anyone have the manual for this type of pedistal? it is chain driven from the wheel to gear, which drives a rack and pinion connected to a shaft which is connected to the rudder by way of a linkage. there are no cables. that is to say it is not a typical rack and pinion gear, it runs fore aft, pushes the steering rod fore and aft, which is then connected to the rudder. does anyone have experience of this problem? any suggestions?

Oliver, I'd give a call to Edson Marine. They are probably the manufacturer of the steering system, and I have found them to be VERY helpful. They are in New Bedford, MA, and can be reached at 508-995-9711.

almost there

Managed to get the offendin peice out by removing the chain, unbolting the pedistal and removing the rack and pinion. not a fun job by any means, but have managed to get it all together again. now i just need to get the part made, hopefully i can find a stocked machine shop. the funny thing is, when i left on this trip, i saw my emergency tiller and thought, "when am i ever going to use this?" Murphy's Law I guess.
