We are considering the purchase of a home on Lake Wylie. Can you tell me about any bridges across the lake and the mast height limitations of those bridges? It would seem at first glance that my only real concern would be the York Road Bridge (Rt. 49).

My boat is docked on Lake Norman, which is just north of there. I haven't sailed on Lake Wylie, but just spent a week with a guy who lives near Wylie and sails that lake regularly. His comments about sailing on the lake is that you pretty much have to be south of Highway 49 for any decent sailing and even then there isn't a lot of room to run. So, expect to do a lot of tacking.

Scott is correct. I've been on Norman and Wylie both, and 49 is about your only overhead obstacle to speak of. Again, small narrow lake that will require a lot of maneuvering. Wylie always struck me as a "party lake", as evidenced by the power boats rafted up near the bridge, and adjacent sandbars.
I doubt seriously that you would consider a home purchase on account of the sailing, (I don't know, I do), but Lake Norman is FAR, FAR, and above your better sailing lake. 530 miles of shoreline, commonly 90 ft. depths, I can sail a big boat there. And have. Just an opinion mate. But I worked my ass off tacking that lake, (Wylie).

(Scott, I used to live in that ghetto in the cove by channel marker 3).
