Curious what you plan to use the bowsprit for? You might the Sail Magazine article entitled "Making Your Own Retracting Bowsprit" and Sailboatowners thread on bowsprits below helpful. If I was going to install one it would be a retractable Selden.

While you can do a lot at the chainplate area most masts are built around the fittings and would require spending money to save money ?

I finally installed a Facnor Bowsprit on the foredeck. I can play my asymmetric safely. However, the bulkhead inside the V berth restricted the position of the aft end of the bowsprit anchor point. The extension of the bowsprit was limited just enough to clear the anchor roller. Anyway, it was a good solution for me to play my cruising spinnaker properly.
