We just purchased a 1976 27. In the bow there is a rubber "vent". It leaks and the previous owner has a plastic cup under in the front of the V berth attached to the vent to catch the rain water. This does not seem like a long term solution, and would like to know if anyone else has dealt with this and if so how. Thanks in advance for your advice

change it out.....

measure the hole.... it's either 3 or 4 inch diameter... then replace the old cowl vent with a lower profile, solar powered fan vent. Check the chandleries... here, online or local stores. By the way, you realize of course that the cowl type of vents are designed to be rotated. When sailing, turn it to face aft. When anchored turn it to face forward to catch a breeze. If you go to the West Marine Advisor you'll find an article about ventilating your boat that will make you wiser.

solar vent

It is exactly as hard as replacing a passive vent, since it's completely self contained. If you can sail your boat, you can handle this task. I have one myself and I like it.

Installation

I installed one last year, worst part was the silicone...(no matter how hard I try I still get it all over me) Make sure you grease the o-rings to get a good seal before you put it back together or you will get condensation in if. I've only been to the boat once when it wasn't running because it had been cloudy for so long.
