If you go to Interlux web-site, the offer recomendations for coating over previously painted surfaces.....
Some paints do not bond to others,

Hello John,

It depends on what you have on her now as to what you can put on it. Some paints you can't put over others. That being said I just did a bottom job a month ago. My choice was Interlux ACT, its an Ablative. It took 1 and 3/4 gallons for 2 coats with a 3rd coat on the leading edges.

I just got the new practical sailor and they tested bottom paint. Highest rated was Petit trinidad and Interlux Ultra with biolux had a recommended rating. I have used Ultra for the last two years with very good success in horrible fouling waters. I may have to haul this spring for a new coat or two. NONE OF THE WATER BASED PAINTS WERE RECOMMENDED. Lucky to get a year and a half of protection.

No to hydrocoat

Hello,

Over the years I have used various Pettitt paints on my boats. I tried Hydrocoat and one year was enough. It didn't work well at all and didn't last long either. I now use Ultima SR40 and it works well for two years. I sail on the Long Island sound and the boat is in the water from May to November and on land during winter. I apply two coats and after the second season the paint is just about worn off. I do a light sanding and then another two coats.

Good luck,
Barry

Re: What's on it now . . .

His profile says he's from Duxbury, Ma. That would be the NW corner of Cape Cod Bay. So he is in a cold water, salt water environment.

John - What you have on the hull now will likely influence what you can put on this spring (unless you sand off all the old stuff first).
