Bottom Paint End-of-life

Thanks, all! I'll continue to research certified surveyors around my area. I have a haul-out scheduled for the 18th, so I need to get a move on if I proceed with a survey.

I'm am 100% getting insurance. I received a quote from a well-known insurance company (the little green guy). They do not require surveys for particular instances. In my case, they require a self-survey with photos only, which should depict pictures of both inside and outside of the boat. Due to the age, length and asking price (15k), a marine surveyor is not warranted. If the boat was over NADA value, I would need a survey. I've called three times to ensure the information that I received was accurate.

That is the same answer I got from a couple of insurance providers since I looked at books in the under $15k cash price range also.

You might check with Boat/US marine insurance before you sign anything. If you keep the boat in a marina they will require insurance.... especially environmental coverage... and most likely want to be named on your policy as a beneficiary... it's common practice.

Chris, I suddenly remember that there is a list of known issues regarding Catalina 27's that were compiled by owners over the years. This is published in the International Catalina 27 owners association. So.. read this list and then re inspect your boat and look for upgrades and retrofits that address these known issues. Chain plates, through hulls, spreader brackets are just a few of the items you should be aware of...

Thanks, Joe. I'd get insurance that would meet marina standards. I'm looking to purchase a 1987 Hunter 28.5. I've looked at all the issues for that particular year/model.

There is no answer to how long ablative bottom paint lasts.

Of course there is and at four years old, the OP's paint has reached the end of its usefull lifespan. Whether or not an ablative paint is cleaned, sailed or anything else, if it is in the water, it is leaching its biocide out 24/7/365. And four years is beyond any reasonable expectation of continued good performance.
