Should I worry about sanding and putting a coat of ablative paint on the spots where the jackstands presently cover?

That all depends on what is under the jack stand pads. If it is a multiseason paint and there is coverage you should be ok not painting there.

-or-

Keep a little extra paint and touch up those areas when the yards puts the boat in the slings. Or have the yard guys move the stands for you. Moving stands is not that difficult if you know what you are doing. Some yards do not allow owners to do this though.

Check with the yard. If you are not going to be there for the launch they may paint the jack stand spots for you if you leave some paint.

You could always leave them bare. Then when out sailing, you always know where you can find some fresh sea life for a snack.

Thanks for the replies. I was afraid that everyone would suggest taking off the jackstands one at a time to coat.

I always have some rug squares and wax paper to put on the jacks stands when they're move to another location.

The jackstands one at a time just use a little care when you do it.
(assuming there are 2 per side and one under the bow.)

Put ANOTHER one next to the one you need gone, THEN take away the old one.

I have never noticed those spots to be any worse over time. This is a very common request. I've done it at least a dozzen times.

The yard guy has always been very accommodating in this regard. Especially if you show your appreciation in the form a gratuity. Ask him to move the stands so you can paint under the pads. My last haul out I couldn't be there until later, so the operator offered to paint the spots under the pads before putting her back in the water. I left some paint and a throw away brush for him. I gave him $20 for moving the stands and the final touch up before splash.
