I December I noticed I had a cracked bell housing that was due to a manufacturing defect.

I live by the saying "while your in there, might as well"... So a cracked bell housing turned into this:

Replaced rear main engine seal
Rebuilt alternator
Rebuilt starter
Replaced all four motor mounts
Replaced every hose and hose clamp in the engine compartment
Rebuilt Perko sea strainer
Replaced 90's with one piece bronze sweeping ells
Replaced valve cover gasket
Removed & cleaned HX
Flushed engine with water forwards and backwards
Flushed engine with Rydlime forwards & backwards
Flushed engine with water forwards & backwards
Flushed engine with distilled water
Filled engine with new non-Dex-Cool antifreeze
Replaced t-stat
Rebuilt raw water pump
Replaced impeller
Stripped and painted most any components I could get at
Replaced battery cables
Added ground jumper from starter to ground point on engine
Replaced anti-siphon valve
Changed petcocks on HX, Strainer & t-stat housing with 1/4 turn valves
Changed both fuel filters
Changed tranny fluid and flushed four fresh quart through it.
Painted tranny
Replaced Prop
Replaced PSS bellows, o-rings and set screws re-machined stainless rotor
Had prop shaft trued and checked for fit & face
Replaced every nut and bolt I removed from the engine with new
Adjusted valves
Replaced cutlass bearing

I'm sure I missed a few things but I test ran the motor on the hard today and she purrs like a kitten.

Other projects:

I also just got the boat out of the barn and had the bottom completely done. I PAID to have it done this time!! ;) Been there & done it too many times!!

This included striping all paint and previous coatings right down to the original gelcoat and then testing moisture content. She was then faired, and any defects or voids were filled with a Cabosil / West System filler putty. While I was at it we torqued the keel, didn't need much if any, and then wrapped the keel to hull joint with unidirectional and bi directional fiberglass cloth and West System. The entire keel was stripped down to bare lead and faired with a mixture of Cabosil, Milled Fiber & West System. After all this was complete she was treated to six coats of Interlux 2000E then hot coated with two coats of Pettit Copolymer ablative paint one being a tracer coat.

She sure looks sexy below the waterline now but my wallet is feeling raped..;)

Unfortunately I did not get to some other projects I wanted to like rebuilding the pedestal and re-wiring the boat and replacing the 120v and 12v panels but there is always next winter.. Time for sailing!

Oh I also replaced the Acrylic in both hatches, replaced my wind speed/direction with a new ST-60 and re-wired the VHF cable in the spar with RG-8U and bought her a new main sail..

Scraping:

Keel Joint:

Fairing:

Barrier Coat:

Done!!

All that for a small crack? I remember my father in law, this goes years back, when his window air conditioner gave out after 20 years he said; "I'm going to look for them warranty papers". Good job, we have enjoyed the the work in progress updates you have furnished. I agree that 25+ years old bell housing must have been defective.

So, basically, you've been slacking all winter long, and are now just getting around to splashing the boat... ;)

Looking good Maine Sail... I appreciate all the hard work you've done on your boat and all the very thorough writeups you've posted. :)

When do you splash the boat???

Re: Been a busy winter

What type of paint do you use on your engine and transmission? I need to touch up a few areas on mine and I am curious to what you do to clean the engine up and then paint some areas. Nothing like a clean and sharp looking engine.

Your boat looks great. I am seriously considering pulling mine out for the winter next year and having it soda blasted to take it down to jell coat. After that I will repair the blisters that I find, barrier coat it, put a few coats of bottom paint on it.

The motor is a 2003 and it had a porous casting. Westerbeke offered up a replacement at no charge without me even asking for it. They are a good company..

No! I only wish my yard was big enough to have one that big and I would. My barn is to small to fit my boat and more like a work shop. I paid the boatyard to do the bottom this time..:)

On aluminum I use a zinc chromate primer, with respirator and ventilation and then the Westerbeke factory spray paint. On steel I use a metal etching primer by Dupli-Color then the Westerbeke red. Both methods seem to last as long or longer than the factory finish. Small parts I do bake though..

P.S. You never know about blisters. I expected to find a few but only found a few voids. 30 years and no blisters!:) You might get lucky too...

Re: Been a busy winter

I saw the bottom job up close and it looks great. My list of projects is not quite as long but I also had a productive winter. Hopefully going sailing tomorrow.

BTW, my next house will have a boat barn with a loft rec room.

SHEEEESH! And I thought I was doing good by replacing a few hoses, re-stuffing the stuffing box and waxing! I feel so inadequate.

Feel like a real slacker now. Thought I was doing good by hand waxing the boat (that took 2 trips to the health club sauna to get out the soreness).

If my old Hunter (which was the same age) looked that good I would have had a hard time parting with it.

She looks great, Maine Sail- I pass a 36T on the dock on the way to my boat- similiar hull colour, that is where the resemblance stops!!
