My Oday 27 has a traveler installed over the cockpit, about 5feet from the mast, it also has a boomvang which is not installed, do you think the use of both devices is recomended?

Useful downwind

I have mid-boom sheeting on my C27. The vang is not very helpful upwind, but does keep the boom from rising and the sail 'cupping' when runing before the wind. I'd say install it and run the control line back to the cockpit. Roger C27 #5012 & Mabel Cape Cod

Vang vs. Traveler

Javier, Both vang and traveler are very useful trimming tools. The addition of the boom vang would greatly enhance the performance of your boat. The vang controls the angle of the boom to the mast, and therefore allows you to set the correct amount of twist in the mainsail. Mostly used in reaching and running situations, you can "power up" the main by tightening the vang and decreasing twist. Conversely by easing the vang you depower the main as it allows the leech to twist open at the top. The traveler is used for upwind sailing and controls the lateral position of the boom. In light air you can pull the traveler up to windward a bit so the boom can be on centerline without excessive leech/mainsheet tension. In heavy air easing the traveler down to leeward will reduce heel without twisting the leech open too much. Thanks, Bill Colombo Doyle Sailmakers
