Vang vs. Traveler
Javier, Both vang and traveler are very useful trimming tools. The addition of the boom vang would greatly enhance the performance of your boat. The vang controls the angle of the boom to the mast, and therefore allows you to set the correct amount of twist in the mainsail. Mostly used in reaching and running situations, you can "power up" the main by tightening the vang and decreasing twist. Conversely by easing the vang you depower the main as it allows the leech to twist open at the top. The traveler is used for upwind sailing and controls the lateral position of the boom. In light air you can pull the traveler up to windward a bit so the boom can be on centerline without excessive leech/mainsheet tension. In heavy air easing the traveler down to leeward will reduce heel without twisting the leech open too much. Thanks, Bill ColomboDoyle Sailmakers
