Bob, In an e-mail generated from my 272 boat review, a prospective 272 owner mentioned that Rudy Nickerson told him that the 272 had won some sort of design award. Do you know anything about it? If so, let all of us 272 owners know, so we can strut a bit :^) If not, how about checking it out with Rudy? you da man!!Just got done checking out your photos again. Great web page. Tom

Hi Tom...

I'll be seeing Rudy this weekend and I'll find out. I'm not aware of any design award, but Hunt associates have garnered several in the past so it may be likely that the 272 was the recipient of one. Cheers, Bob

busy, busy, busy, R.W.

but I still find time to go to the boat to get out of the heat here in NW Ohio. The rudder repair worked out very well, R.W. I sat on the fence for a long time trying to decide whether to go with gelcoat or paint to finish up. Chose the paint. Put it on and cursed every flaw. Sanded and tried again and again. Said to heck with it... I'll live with it. And you know, it looks great on the boat. The minor flaws in the job are next to impossible to see in the sunlight. I may have told you earlier that the I completed the shelving behind the fold-up table in the cabin. Went ahead and began varnishing the interior wood surfaces with polyurethane satin. Next spring I'll complete it. Next major project is a tiller pilot. My wife has offered to buy it for me as a combination birthday/fathersday gift. I told her that that was really a bit much, but... (yeah, right!!) Just got back from a two day sail on Lake Erie. First day was a bummer, but yesterday more than made up for the heat and flies of the first. I applied some of Jim Willis' non-skid sealand and superglaze while I was on the boat and am very, very pleased with the results. Haven't been monitoring the Oday site lately as I have offered my services this summer to be a volunteer project manager for a Habitat for Humanity build in neighboring Ottawa County. We actually begin the build next weekend, but it has taken almost a full month to get schedules, drawings, permits, subcontractors and volunteers organized and ready to start. By the way, I broke my left heel a couple of weeks ago and have been hobbling around on one or two crutches until two days ago when I decided to go sailing and leave the crutches at home. Doctor said it would be ok to do as much as my foot will allow me to do and I can put most of my weight on it now. Probably told you more than you wanted to hear. Good to hear from you. Tom

Here's yer answer, Tom...

The 272 was built after O'day was purchased by Lear Siegler. While it didn't win any awards outside of the company, it did win the company's "New Product" award and was the hottest thing at all the boat shows. People were buying them as fast as they could build them. I spoke with a guy who lives in Portsmouth, RI and was a salesmn for O'day at the time and he said that he made his biggest paydays when he dealt the 272's. I guess we can still strut, hmmm? Cheers, Bob
