Would any one out there know the weight of an O'Day 22' Including mast.I am calculating if I have enough buoyancy foam on board.
If she rolls and your hatch boards leave your boat she will sink as you fill with water. How will u secure your hatch boards if gravity is reversed in a rollover?ThNKS FOR THE GREAT ANSWER
I wanted to point out that there are other things to consider besides foam if one is trying to prevent sinking: the condition of your through-hulls, your pipe clamps, bilge pumps and such.emergpa1;
If you can manage to roll a 22 that far.... well, Lord help you! We're NOT talking ocean crossing here, none of our O'DAYs should be out in conditions that could lead to that severe of a knockdown...... and the early (1972-78) 22s would probably "skid" sideways long before they laid over on their sides. If one were going to take an ill-advised ocean voyage in a small boat like a 22, I would hope that they would have the good sense to install a locking setup on the companionway slide (penboards, washboards, hatch boards, whatever you wish to call them), ocean-going cruisers often add a barrel-bolt to secure those panels in place in heavy weather, even a short line that could be tied off to keep them in place will work. HOWEVER, I again would say that our O'DAYS were NEVER intended to be sailed under conditions that severe.
We did lay our CAL 21 over almost 90 DEG. once and despite taking a good amount of water over the coaming into the cockpit, the wide-open companinionway NEVER got close to the water! The boat quickly rounded up as she was designed to, and we caught our breath and continued into the harbor....shaking a bit, but (other than my VERY wet feet!) very dry. The CAL had less ballast than an O'DAY 22 (just deeper down) and the same sail area. She also has less beam.

Mostly true.. but the 40 foot Pogo 12.50 has positive buoyancy.Most boats don't have buoyancy foam, and anything larger than 27-30 feet will almost never have positive buoyancy. The only buoyancy foam you really need to be concerned with are the USCG required ones, aka your life jackets and throwable floatation devices.
And so do the Etap boats, but that doesn't really mean it's a safety feature, I consider it a marketing feature. As already stated the factors that will keep the boat afloat are much broader reaching than foam.Mostly true.. but the 40 foot Pogo 12.50 has positive buoyancy.
