Would any one out there know the weight of an O'Day 22' Including mast.I am calculating if I have enough buoyancy foam on board.

Most boats don't have buoyancy foam, and anything larger than 27-30 feet will almost never have positive buoyancy. The only buoyancy foam you really need to be concerned with are the USCG required ones, aka your life jackets and throwable floatation devices.

Well, here are the specs from O'DAY. Of course these do not include: outboard, gas tank, anchor & chain/rode, all the other gear that you may carry.
1972-78: Approximately 1800-2100#
1979: Approximately 2183#
1980-83: Approximately 2283#
O'DAY originally installed enough foam to float the boat and normal crew in the unlikely event of a hull breach. (add approximately 600-700# to above figures to include crew weight).
In reality, unless you are planning an ocean voyage (not really recommended in a stock 22) or have really bad luck with thru-hulls breaking or bad luck in finding rocks....... A good bilge pump will prevent the need of ever finding out that you don't have enough flotation. Boats the size and type of the O'DAY 22 rarely sink due to lack of foam inside. Unless there is a leak somewhere in the hull or perhaps the cockpit drain, very little water is likely to find it's way in before you would notice and be able to sponge or pump it out. I'd keep an eye on the thru-hulls (on the stock boat that only means one cockpit drain and one drain for the galley sink. A few early 22s might have had an installed marine head with intake and discharge thru-hulls and later (1979-83) models do have a centerboard pendant tube that might leak.)
Remember also that in a pinch, there is a lot on a boat that will float enough to help keep a catastrophically holed boat afloat, coolers, fenders, spare life jackets, pool noodles, air trapped inside......... even a full gas tank will provide some buoyancy.

In other words, go sailing! Be careful not to clobber any rocks or other submerged hazards, maintain your thru-hulls, and you will find that whatever foam in there is enough (and most likely will never be needed anyway.) I'm not saying "Act recklessly and ignore the potential for trouble", proper seamanship should be practiced and care taken to avoid problems........ but I am trying to say that flotation is not generally mandatory for typical sailing of boats like the 22, is it good last resort insurance? YES, but would I let it worry me normally? No. We sailed out old CAL 21 for 38 seasons on Buzzards Bay with no built-in flotation. Was there ever a time that I was even a little nervous about that? Well, yes.... when we developed a small crack just ahead of the trunk for the retractable keel and we had a periodic leak. However, we were never in real danger of sinking from that crack, due to the fact that we noticed it and had it repaired. Never had more that an easily bailed amount of water come in. Had the leak worsened, the boat would have noticeably settled low in hte water and we could have taken care of the water inside before it became too late (Boatyard where we kept our boat also kept an eye on all their customer's boats as well.)

On my DS II, flotation IS important! Although the cokpit is supposed to self-bail....... it doesn't always drai nbefore some water gets in between hte hull and deck, and if I ever (Heaven forbid!!) were to capsize, the flotation wil lhelp to keep her floating higher in the water, aiding the righting process and the bailing out afterwards. Your 22 has a real self-bailing cockpit and is self-righting (should never capsize). Even if yo udid manage to lay her over on her side, there are still very few ways for water to get inside quick enough to flood the boat, she will stay high enough on her side to keep the hatches well above water. I would recommend keeping the cockpit seat locker hatch secured while sailing if the weather gets rough though, and good seamanship involves closing the main cabin hatches in rough weather.

If she rolls and your hatch boards leave your boat she will sink as you fill with water. How will u secure your hatch boards if gravity is reversed in a rollover?

If you can manage to roll a 22 that far.... well, Lord help you! We're NOT talking ocean crossing here, none of our O'DAYs should be out in conditions that could lead to that severe of a knockdown...... and the early (1972-78) 22s would probably "skid" sideways long before they laid over on their sides. If one were going to take an ill-advised ocean voyage in a small boat like a 22, I would hope that they would have the good sense to install a locking setup on the companionway slide (penboards, washboards, hatch boards, whatever you wish to call them), ocean-going cruisers often add a barrel-bolt to secure those panels in place in heavy weather, even a short line that could be tied off to keep them in place will work. HOWEVER, I again would say that our O'DAYS were NEVER intended to be sailed under conditions that severe.

We did lay our CAL 21 over almost 90 DEG. once and despite taking a good amount of water over the coaming into the cockpit, the wide-open companinionway NEVER got close to the water! The boat quickly rounded up as she was designed to, and we caught our breath and continued into the harbor....shaking a bit, but (other than my VERY wet feet!) very dry. The CAL had less ballast than an O'DAY 22 (just deeper down) and the same sail area. She also has less beam.

I wanted to point out that there are other things to consider besides foam if one is trying to prevent sinking: the condition of your through-hulls, your pipe clamps, bilge pumps and such.

Also, I guess in a small boat like ours, if a storm does sneak up, and if you are as inexperienced as I am, and if a couple of things go wrong at the same time, (like you can't get sails down, lose a rudder, get pooped, or all three, etc,) a rollover, or at least a slap down, should be considered possible.

I wanted to enlarge the discussion around if someone is considering putting foam in a boat, then that is only a small part of what needs to be done if one is trying to improve the safety of the vessel and crew. I am currently reading a couple of blue water cruisers guides and thought I would put in my half cent worth.
