I need to have my Catalina 25 moved from one lake to another. I need to hire a moving company because I do not have a trailer. From what I have read trailers need to be set up specific to the bulkhead layout of each boat to avoid damage. besides questioning them on their experience and getting references, is there anything else that should be kept in mind?

I would think that for a boat that small, just supporting the hull and keel correctly would be enough, especially for a relatively short move. How far is it moving? All in NC?

I would think you could find someone with a C25 trailer and rent it for a few days, saving a ton of money.

Trailer setup for a swing keel vs fixed keel is very different. What do you have?

Thanks for the replies. My first post and it looks like I should have included more info. It is a swing keel and I am moving it from Lake Norman to Lake James, only about an hour.

Sent poster a private email advising who to contact as well as advising swing keel trailer would not work as I knew the designer for Catalina trailers now deceased. Big problem is on the other end at Lake James has no one there with sailboat experience but again gave him name for handling the job but that person is not cheap. I delivered sailboats of all sizes to both lakes and even had a dealership at one point on lake norman

Welcome to SBO :)

You might want to contact this company as they appear to be located in your state.

Already he is now aware who to go to on lake Norman as the same individual will be working on his boat. There are other issues not mentioned in his post. I was the Catalina dealer and know the lakes all to well. By the way @Hunter216 do you know
Which anti fouling paint is used on the ACP hulls?

I think there is an overlap with the question.. Support based on interior bulkheads is travel lift requirement. Boats on commercial trailers have their keels supporting the majority of the weight while the pads merely balancing the boat. Same thing on the hard with stands...

The boat is specially a Catalina 25 swing keel which will either sit on bunk boards or pads with the swing keel lowered onto a keel tray (trailer) or ground if supported by stands
The boat is on Lake Norman at a marina that appears to have been sold of course located on the north end of the lake. The poster has advised work to be done by All Seasons marina. To go by water, the mast has to be lowered to clear a bridge. My understanding there will be work performed at All Seasons. Yard manager is a long time friend who is the yard manager but his company previous to that was specifically working as a sailboat repair man whom Beneteau, Catalina, Hunter and others knew well and used his services. His name is Tim McRorie. The poster indicated work to be done and to find a slip for the boat. Not sure if Lake James is going to be considered now but may move it to another lake. The best advice for him is to talk with an expert who is in a better position to help is Tim McRorie as Tim runs the only sailboat yard on Lake Norman that has a travel lift too

Thanks for all the info. I am only a few weeks into owning a sailboat; a purchase my wife and I have been dreaming of for years. Nice to know there is a helpful community to come to.

I had a fresh water Hunter 216 before with an ACP hull. We primed with some Pettit product and used Pettit Vivid for the anti-foul in fresh water. It was one of the few hard anti-fouls that would tolerate drying out without loss of protection, so great for trailered boats that spend time in the water.

I received a note from the poster that Tim is taking care of him and the Boat Exchange is moving the boat to lake watagua Thank you all for contributing but this where I felt steering him in the right direction as I knew the area all to well as it was a part of my territory knowing everyone that of course who is left

Catalina 270 255 Wabamun. Welcome to the marina
@Crazy Dave Condon - Really? Did I miss something here? I'm reading that the boat could get from here to there without ever leaving the water? Drop the mast and gas 'er up. It's not that hard at all, and a heckuva lot less money than hiring a truck or the beer purchase that borrowing a trailer would incur!
(btw - Happy New Year)

Moving boat from North Carolina to East Tennessee by truck and trailer by a reputable boat hauling company. I delivered so many boats to all the lakes in East Tennessee and of course North Carolina. At one point I had four dealerships in three states and I was on the road which included boats at All Seasons as well. No one realizes what I contributed to this industry and those who I knew and I will leave it at that.
