Hello Everyone, I would like to thank all of you for all the information on this forum. I am an avid reader. After a tremendous amount of research, worry, and time my wife and I recently purchased a 1983 Catalina 30, with a 21 HP Universal M25. This is our first boat, We are the new guys...We had the boat surveyed and everything else that one should do. Except for a few small blisters and a Catalina smile the boat looks fine. I want to purchase a boat towing service plan and I am wondering in any of you have any favorites in the San Diego area, who and why? Also do any of you know how to bleed the " box" muffler on boat. I was advised to know how to do this in case of an occurance of a hard starting engine, to keep the water from backing up into the engine???? ( thats what someone told me ) Thanks again for all the information in the past and I certainly appreciate any advice given.

Welcome to the club!

Congrats! Welcome to the cub. I also have a 1983 cat 30, and I jealous of your engine. I have an early 1983 boat and it has the 11 hp Universal 5411. So, count yourself lucky! But then I can't really complain about the 5411. Although I can't power into heavy seas, I can cruise at 5.3 knots burning less than .25 gal per hour. :) If your lucky you'll never need a towning service, but Tow-Boat-US is very popular on the CHesapeake Bay...

Try your insurance for towing coverage

Your insurance may be able to cover towing expenses (probably for less) I know PEMCO does. About the hard to start engine: if the cause is a aqua-lift muffler full of water, there should be a screw at the bottom of this fiberglass box (your muffler). Unsrew & let the water drain into your bilge, then replace the screw. your engine should turn over easier. If you want to prevent this altogether, turn your water intake valve (for the engine) off when you are done running it (Don't forget to turn it back on before you start the engine though). That will keep water from siphoning into the muffler. Better yet, install a vented loop in the line to avoid siphoning altogether. Enjoy your new boat!

Boat US

I have my insurance through Boat US & there are different levels of towing insurance available. Surprisingly, their rates are very competitive (cheaper by a few bucks than my previous policy). I'm sure you can also buy the towing insurance separately as well. Check out their website www.boatus.com. LaDonna

A couple of option

Sea Tow and Tow Boat US are the options here on the Chesapeake, but I know that my insurance company, Allstate, was trying to push coverage on me. In any event, I strongly recommend signing up for coverage. At least your first year. After that you will probably be able to sail it into any slip. The boats are that easy to handle. CD
