So, your sailing in the tropics and hit a whale and your boat sinks.
Quickly, you manage to get a 6' rubber raft inflated and floating, but that is it...

1 thing comes floating to you.. A heavy thick glass wine bottle partially filled with wine.

I though about how this could save your life, but only if you can break the wine bottle. The glass could be used as a knife. You could cut the meat of fish with it... You could stab fish that swim close to the surface.. But, I am perplexed as to how I could break the bottle without hurting myself or puncturing the raft.. Any ideas?

I would imagine that you also have your rigging knife on you as I always carry one in a belt holster, even on mild calm days, just in case.

I think you'd be better off find a way to collect rain water in it. Stabbing fish that come to the surface? Have you ever tried that? Not sure if you'd really want to risk puncturing your dinghy because that could kill you.

You couldn't break the bottle. Try it at home.

Drink the wine and then beat yourself on the head with the bottle for trolling on sailing forums thus setting up the karma that came back in the form of a whale to sink your boat.

Not necessary to break the bottle. While turning the bottle up to drink the wine, sunlight reflecting off the bottom of the bottle caught the attention of a passing airplane and led to my rescue.... -Paul

I just got this PM from the OP titled "Troll Post":

Roger Long.. Hmm, lets see what I can find out about you. I already know you own an Endeavour 32 ( white hull green stripe ) and live in Portland. I frequent those waters occasionally.. I have friends in Cape Elizabeth. I'll keep an eye out for your boat this summer...
Even if my humor was a bit sharp or unfair this morning, does anyone else find this a bit creepy?

If it had a friendly greeting and conversation it might not be so nutty sounding.

Need basic items in a ditch kit. I would think a good blade would be a basic requirement along with some food/water/radio/signal devices (reflective & active)...

Planning is everything!

Surely, there must be some creative ideas out there???? How can the bottle be broken? I ask because ( and if you have ever been on extended voyages ) Fish are curious and will swim close to any vessell and stare at you.. But try to catch them with your hand and they are fast or sliver out of your hands.. But, stab or wound them ( which is possible to do ) and your 100 steps ahead of the game..

( ignore that guy above ) Not sure what thats all about.. :hijacked:???

I don't think I'd want a bunch of broken glass laying around in my inflatable.

Wait for the ocean to freeze and bang the bottle on the ice. As I said earlier try to break a wine bottle without benefit of metal or stone.

Would it help to know what type of wine, or is this the riddle?
All U Get I thought the hammer head was clever.;)

First thing I would do is take the oar (there is a pair of oars with this inflatable?) and their usually made of aluminum and put the oar across both knees while my legs are slightly bent and together then I would try smashing the bottle across the oar

HYDROSHOCK will get the cork out of the bottle and without breaking it.
1. Invert the bottle - neck down
2. hold the bottle firmly in one hand
3. SLAP the bottom (now inverted to the 'up' position) as many times as needed to extract the cork. The energy of the slap will transmit ultimately to the cork, and eventually by many slaps will remove the cork from the bottle. Then,
4. Drink all the wine, fall into a slumber in the bottom of the dinghy while contemplading you nescht steps.
5. Remember that yho inwertd th ebobble, dranked all the whine, then falled asleap in the dinghly ... but trie to bemember the tyme whan the corke wnet pop so you can ded resckon your positoron in case yuo dunt ever waek up agin so the unnertaker can properrly dispoz of them reamayns, etc. etc. If there is 2 bobbles floatin by your bettr choiz will b the Cheerdonny with the high alchenhol contennt - hic.
Rx. No need to break a wine bottle to extract the cork .... just invert and slap the bottom until you are silly or the cork pops out enough to grab it.

Slapping the bottom of an inverted wine bottle will 95% of the time 'pop' the cork out after many successive 'slaps'.

Not bad.. So far the hammerhead idea and diamond ring ideas take the cake.. Diamond ring, I wear one - so that might work by cutting the head off the bottle. With the hammerhead, I was thinking sharks will eventually show up.. Perhaps you could wack one over the head and it would break the bottle.. Thats, if it got close enough.. Then, that made me think about turtles.. If one happened to show up - you could surely break it off the shell.. Again, if it got close enough..
