A freind and I were discussing naming a boat "Robert E Lee" and it was suggested this name would be offensive. What do you think?

No...

Robert E Lee was a great and brilliant military leader. He may have been on the wrong side but that is irrelevant. To name one's boat after great leaders might be considered inappropriate in some cases, but surely not offensive.

An attention getter

Personally I really like R.E.LEE he fought for God and Country. He just considered Virginia his country. In those days state came first. But a lot of baggage is attached to the name and some won't like it. Just like the confederate flag. A lot of people consider it as standing for independence from being told what to do by big government and pride in ancestors. Others consider it racist and standing for slavery and oppression. But whatever your reason for naming your boat others will respond to the name because of their personal baggage. White Southern men generally won't be offended!!!!! I'd venture some black men in New York city or Chicago might want to burn your boat!!! Why not just call it Lazy Daze or Mycondo???

What's offensive

Is flying the Confederate flag, because of the implied defense of slavery. Here in Virginia, it's almost all but gone.

Inappropriate? Offensive? My Ass

Why in Virginia there is a holiday every February in honor of him and Stonewall Jackson. There was also a submarine the USS Robert E Lee and Fort Lee is an Army Post in Petersburg Virginia.

Offensive boat name

Yes im sure there are those that would find it offensive. I seem to recall and article where a guy found the term "chinese jibe" offensive. Sheesh. How bout "Robert by the Lee" or just "Bob Lee". Might sneak that one under the radar :) Cheers Rick

Well, it's like this...

If people put as much effort into enjoying themselves as they do trying not to be offensive, we'd all be having tons of fun. It seems that these days you're ALWAYS offending someone or some group. Name the boat what you like...Robt E Lee, Blow Me, Break wind, whatever, because in the end, you'll always offend someone. Personally, I don't give a rats ass if somone gets offended with something I choose. Facrissake, you can't please everyone. Having fun and not a care! Cheers, Bob

These Days....

In these days of political correctness, you're going to offend someone if you name it Will of the Wisp. There are some obvious names to avoid, but I don't think this is one of them. If this is the name you want, name it that. If it offends someone, then well....

Just one piece

I wouldn't worry about being offensive. Personally, I'd think of paddle wheel boats before the white bearded fellow. On the other hand, use of icons (R.E.Lee, stars and bars) as public symbols (boat name or decoration) invites interpretation (and misinterpretation). I don't believe that everyone sporting the stars and bars is a racist, but I wouldn't be inclined to accept an invitation from an unknown quantity on a boat plastered in such things. In my experience it just wouldn't be worth it. I haven't had much luck with the skull and bones folks either. Maybe I'd feel differently if I had been raised in the south; but I wasn't.

I always thought that Robert E. Lee was a

steamboat. Now somebody tells me he was a soldier. I have seen offensive names on some boats but historical names certainly wouldn't be among them. Some of the names that I have seen on boats would get you scolded for obscene language during radio distress calls.

General Lee

was the name of the car in "the dukes of hazard county" the TV show as well as a movie. So what the hey, its a little better than a boat in the marina named "Bob on this"

thanks much!!!

I am not considering the name, but the friend in this debate said it would be offensive to others. I disagreed - most people would not give it a thought was my position. Actually, my boat is named Trav'ler- not after Lee's horse, but the connection has been made on the dock before. To my knowledge no one has been offended by my boat's name.

Ah, Freedom in America,

Free speech that is. Too bad Lee fought for the side that was against freedom. But it cost him the ranch. Arlington National Cemetery was his. Seized by the Feds after the war.

MANY years ago, a friend and I patched up an old aluminim duck boat, named it the Robt. E. Leak and rowed and putted around the Susquehanna and Harvey's Lake. The boat now resides in Maine with a cousin. I don't remember anyone saying it was offensive.

Offensive ?

I'm with Bob on this. I personally couldn't care less if my boat name offends someone as lonng as it's not vulgar. They can kiss my rear if they don't like it. Some might find Martin Luther King or Malcom X an offensive name for a boat, but who cares. They have their admirers and detractors just like Robert E Lee has. But having said that, it sounds like a dumb name for a sailboat. Much more appropriate for a paddle wheeler. But why do you care what I think?

John...

You don't need to hold anything back on this forum when expressing your opinion on boat names. Good post - LOL.
