Boat leans to one side while docked

I've recently purchased a 1996 Hunter 280 and it leans slightly to port side while docked (about 2-3" lower). I've checked all the obvious things like emptying the gear locker, filling the diesel fuel tank (on the other side) etc.

While under power the difference is not very noticeable - but when sailing it seems to heel much more excessively on the port side.

Would be very grateful if anyone had any suggestions that I could try

thanks in advance!

Not sure this will help but start with the rig trim. Make sure your mast is vertical. If you have the mast leaning to onside that can be the start of your problem. A simple check is to take you main halyard. touch the lower back shroud on the port side than see that it touches on the starboard side. If you have too much or too little halyard then your mast isn't vertical and you need to tune the rig.

From there you get to learn the innards on your boat. Position of batteries, tanks and stores all can impact how she lays in the water.

Good luck.

+1 for Victor's posting.

Rig, batteries, water, fuel, holding tank (surprising how often a PO will leave the tank at least partly full  ), galley & nav station locations (those you can't change but check for "stuff" in those).

After the rigging has been tuned and other movable items have been equalized port/starboard and fore/aft you can fine tune the boat's balance by carefully loading beer into the easily accessible spaces! ;)

It's called a "list"

31's ideas are correct.

It's called a "list", either port list or starboard list. Many, many boats have it. Use it to search on this board or Google. If it is extreme, then you have issues, but many boats have small amounts, it is what it is. Sometimes it causes water to pool either on deck or in the cockpit, in which case something needs to be done. Otherwise, many of us have simply learned to live with small amounts.

Leaning

When my 07 H-36 was brand new at the dealers dock it was leaning
because batteries 2-4D'd and Gen all same side and dealer added weight
to port side but I removed the extra weight and moved the batteries to port side.

Check your weight distribution batteries, fuel, water and holding tank distribution. The easiest to re-arrange might be the batteries or you may add ballast to the opposite side.

Weight

Anybody who adds weight to a boat that is NOT a battery has some serious rethinkin' to do! :)

Absolute nonsense!

The only sane way to counterbalance a list is to add this essential equipment on the opposite side:D:D

weighing 46 lbs, it makes 35 lbs of ice/day. "Worth it's weight..."

In my Islander 30 when I was cooking breakfast and Nancy was moving about in the boat I could tell where she was port or starboard by the direction the bacon fat in the skillet moved. Even a 130 pound woman can change to the trim on a 5 ton boat.

My buddy here has his trim adjusted with ammunition. Seriously. 50 thousand rounds worth.

I would call that essential equipment..

Always room for a better mousetrap, as long as it's not the head! :)

Amen. Considering the tons of ice I've hauled to boats over 30 years, that is an essential piece of equipment. "Cut the ends off your toothbrush, Honey, we've got an ice maker!"

I don't agree with that statement. There's a lot of other stuff which add weight to a boat. Booze is used for balancing and many other creature comfort stuff. BTW I am a racer !

Actually we reduced the consumption to avoid adding batteries; like LED everywhere.

Cases...

of beer were considered moveable and disposable ballast on one of the boats I raced on...

Any added weight should be purposeful. Sparkman and Stevens designed a boat with bronze floors to reduce the ballast that would be needed because ballast was counted as negatives when rating a boat for racing.

boat listing to one side

Fortunately My boat sits on her lines If it didnt I would be hard pressed to find any extra "stuff" to move around because there isnt any. Seriously when purchasing a boat it should sit on her lines without listing If it does not \the surveyor should tell you why. If he cant look for another surveyor!

Our 1990 H-33.5 has always had an inherent Starboard List of 2 to 3 Degrees (as noted buy our properly installed and leveled Lev-O-Gage Clineometer). When really studying the boat and it's layout, it is because of the factory distribution of equipment and systems. The holding tank was off center to the Starboard side, The Fuel Tank and Galley to the Starboard side. Tha Batteries were close to center line but slightly to the port. The 50 Gallon Water Tank was on center line, but the 6 Gallon Hot Water Heater was to the starboard. Net effect was more weight to Starboard than to Port. I have put tool boxes and tool bags to the Port along with the Rum Rations. It is now close with maybe 0.5 to 1.0 Degree Starboard List. Like Stu said "It is what it is" just tweak it where you can, and then live with it.
