My friend from out of state wants to purchase a 21 year old boat in Fl, and keep Fl. as home base for the boat but continue to live out of state for one more year. He is having trouble getting insurance because he will not live in the same state as the boat. Does anyone have insurance for this type of situation?

I don't think what state you live in matters

with insurance, I think its where you keep the boat. I say that because I live in NJ but keep my boat in Connecticut 2 states away. I agree call BoatUS Insurance, they are a good company. Check the link below.

It's all in the location

It really is based upon the location of the boat. If the boat is based out of FL, that is where he will have to purchase insurance. The premium, while based on many factors, is partly based on where the boat will be sailed and thus the hazrds associated with that area. Different rates (lower) apply for those of us on land locked lakes versus thouse who have access to the ocean and hurricanes. Whether he sails the boat offshore or only within a restricted limit will also affect his premium. That said, it pays to shop around. In the end I found rates from Boat US to be the best for me. But, I keep my boat on an inland lake. Friends of mine with the identical boat down on the gulf coast of TX or in FL pay more than twice what I pay for premium, and that is with offshore distance limitations. Happy Hunting.
