Boat hook

Our boat has three Garelick brand boat hooks; two on deck and one spare below in a locker. Strong and adjustable. Lock them tight enough to push away. Guaranteed for life. Maker has replaced two broken hook ends at no charge. Easy to self replace. Garelick Adjustable Boat Hook

One I got dumpster diving, another someone threw away because they bent the end portion. Cut it off and installed a new tip, which is my go to first one. The third I may have purchased many years ago. Nice thing about them is they float, so if it gets pulled out of your hand when trying to stop a 35K pound boat in a blow, you can go back and retrieve it.

Here is how I store them on deck. Hunter 42 Owner Modifications and Upgrades

A pop rivet or two would also have worked.
I have tried a pop rivet, they don't last long. There is often some twisting force on the pole, this causes the aluminum pop rivets to shear and you are back to square one.

My solution was similar to Tom's a 10-24 SS bolt with a nylock nut. The protruding end of the bolt was amputated with a Dremel.

So far I haven't found that to be the case.... maybe in a few more years.

The application might have been slightly different. The hook end of the pole was bent. So I cut it off and reattached the hook with rivets, they worked loose and were repaired with the bolts. At the time we were using the boat hook to pick up mooring buoys which is a different application than picking up dock lines as the pole often twisted.

But it won’t collapse?

Greg
True, the length is 12 feet, but it stores on deck and I have others available. We use it for mooring pendants and lines at finger docks.

I have some SS rivets that would have worked, but that stuff is neatly stored in NH and we’re aboard for possibly the last winter.
