I chose to pull wide load no greater than 12" between 1:30 - 5 a.m. on interstate to be blunt was much safer versus during the day. Hardly any traffic and the few tractor trailers at that time were professionals. Cars not a concern as the hull road higher. In the years I did that I had police say it was safer and never a ticket. I stayed in the right lane at all times pulling at 55 mph. However, I did purchase wide load permits for the states I went thru.
So I was not cheating those states out of their money. It helped
