Cheapest way to get a 25'er hauled across country? (TO to Van)
Getting quotes from 98 hun to 25 grand(!).
Boat is only worth 9500 +/- so.......
Was hoping to find hauler who would otherwise be empty coming this way who'd be willing to haul cheap.
That ever happen?

Happens all the time. It's called "deadheading" and usually the person paying for the haul has to cover it. I wish I had known someone needing a return haul when we bought our boat.
Have you thought about hauling it back yourself? Should be much cheaper. Maybe fly there and rent a truck one way?

If you don't have a trailer, the cheapest would be to buy a trailer of sorts, and do it yourself. Then sell the trailer afterwards. You could search for a trailer virtually anyplace between Van and To. As long as it's properly serial numbered, you can register it in Van and get a plate. Normally you've got something like 45 days to have it "inspected", you'd have to check.

When I picked up my 25 footer in Rochester NY, I used an 18 foot lowboy hay trailer. Towed it up, loaded boat and towed home.. Note the difference in apparel between first and last pic First pic it was 27 degrees in New York. last was 4 days later in Texas- it was 80. Both in November :)

Total out of pocket for trip? about $1500.

If you don't have a suitable tow vehicle, consider renting a normal U Haul truck. Even the smallest ones could probably haul a smaller sailboat, and they are all equipped with tow balls.

[QUOTE="Drinky Crow, Boat comes w/cradle guess I could rent flat bed trailer + tow vehicle.[/QUOTE]

If you use a privately rented trailer be sure to consider the cost to load the boat and cradle onto the flatbed and also the unloading at your destination. Tie down, tie down, tie down will also be your responsibility. Is the width of the boat wide enough to be oversized for your hauling? A boat transport company would have that knowledge and responsibility.

Please advise what brand and model sailboat. I was going to ask if there was a cradle which you have answered. Is this cradle designed for that boat. Is it a swing, shoal draft or deep fin keel. If not is it a water ballast.

If considering U ship, get you insurance up to snuff. I do not trust those guys coming across country. I was a former dealer who towed small and large sailboats for many years with experience which is why I ask these questions.

I don't know anything concrete. I was looking for some lateral solutions that might hold possibilities. My son shipped a statue from Indonesia once. Had to go down to the docks in Boston to pick it up. A 3/4 ton pickup waiting 4 hours in line with a bunch of big rigs for our turn at the warehouse loading dock. The whole operation felt pretty seedy, but we got our shipment at twice the cost of the statue because we didn't know it had arrived and they charged an arm and a leg for every day you were late picking it up.
Freight from Toronto to Vancouver doesn't cross country lines and should be much easier to do. I know it's done. Private shippers can and do ship by rail on occasion. They claim rail and ship are the two cheapest ways to ship. Their website looked good. Do you know anyone in Toronto that can take a drive over and check it out?
If there's anything I can do to help further, just let me know.

I shipped a C270 from Missouri to Ottawa, ON. The quotes were up to $10k. In the end I shipped using uShip.
If you decide this way, be triple careful.
My first attempt failed and I lost $500. The guy sounded fine, we exchanged emails, even talked on the phone. He requested down payment, which sounded reasonable ($500). He never showed up, provided a ton of excuses ("dog ate my homework"), stalled for time, etc. Eventually, I cut my losses and started looking for someone else.
After some 4-5 weeks, I found someone out of Kansas City who agreed to do it for $3k. He was fantastic.
The short story is that you never know.
Advice? Check references, don't send any money up front and be prepared for losses.

btw. Andrew's Trucking out of Niagara-on-the-Lake is probably one of the best in business. Not cheap, but certainly good.

Btw 2. I would not transport my boat in a normal cradle on a flatbed. You risk damaging the hull. If you have to, make sure that you have the boat supported by as many pads as possible (6-8, not the common 4).

Btw 3. Preparing for transport is not a trivial task. In my case, the boatyard did it (and did a good job). If you never did it, consider hiring someone who did (and does).

And lastly, I would seriously consider selling the boat in Toronto and buying in Vancouver. A few people I knew moved from here to BC and most of them, initially, considered moving the boat, but eventually decided that it wasn't worth it. The few $k you save on transport can cover the upgrades you may need to do, if you buy another boat.

I think unless you are very attached to the boat, you could sell it and replace it at your destination and save money. Next, buy a used trailer and do it yourself. It is a small boat, really. However, used trailers are actually harder to find than good used boats.

At the end of the day, since you don’t already own the boat, take the average costs that you’ve been provided, add that your buying power, and find something local.
Unless this boat is a museum piece, or you plan to keep it forever, you’ll never get that number of thousands back.

That is a whole new ballgame. Even though we have shipped boats several times (when we were young and ambitious and concentrating mostly on the initial purchase price) I agree with what Meriachee posted.
