Kerm that's not the same things at all.

Our children become adults, grow into us, hopefully better than us. They outlive us, and carry our legacy forward. Its really the only reason were here. Every time I hear someone call themselves 'pet parents' it makes me feel like throwing up in my mouth.
So why would we invite non-sailing guests onboard? Or get married? Some things are neither rational nor explainable.

If you have to ask the question "why" then you don't understand and there is nothing I can do to make you understand.
I have always had a dog and don't consider caring for them adding complexity to my life.

Jackdaw has a good point. Lots of people have dogs at our marina and too often they do their business right at the end of the dock because the poor things just can't hold it any longer. Not only should we question why add the complexity, pets would never ask to go sailing. They much prefer to be happy and comfortable at home. That becomes even more of an issue as the pet ages and dogs age all too quickly. It can't be very pleasant for pets to be confided below decks during storms, especially for dogs needing a walk. I love dogs and cats. I chose two cats so they would have each others company and could be easily left alone for up to four days. Now that one has developed diabetes I have a cat sitter come in twice a day for his injections. Both my boyz are happy to be left home. My dock neighbors had to give up their adorable pooch.

LOL with that logic you must invite stray dogs to come along. ;^)

I hear someone call themselves 'pet parents'
Be careful visiting Arizona in the winter.. We went to an outdoor market in Lake Havasu and saw a lot of couples pushing baby strollers. But.. there were no babies in the carriages, only small dogs LOL.. I see this all the time here. When my little pooch gets old.. and I get older.. he will probably have me trained to push him around in a baby carriage also.. (not there yet fortunately)

You really are a complex person. :)

I agree with your thought "Why get a new dog to be a sail boat buddy?" Sailing is complex enough.

While I'm looking forward to introducing my grandson to the experience of sailing, I don't want a 3 year old on the boat with out one of his parents dedicated to watching him. A young dog or cat is very much like a child and vulnerable on a boat. Like a person new to sailing without the capacity to understand the simple warnings "BOOM" WAVE , "HOLD ON", or don't jump on to the dock.

But we are humans and we need our companions.

....but bringing them on a sailboat is nothing but hassle. If you don't have one, why introduce that level of complexity to your sailing?
Unfortunately, it can be nearly as much, if not more, hassle to leave them home when away for long. If they bark and whine for days, even intermittently, you'll also be hearing from your neighbors and/or animal control with your return. So now in addition to other preparation to cruise one has to arrange for a dog/pet sitter, potentially $$ if you don't have trustworthy friends willing to do it. Even with cats it's not that easy. After 17 yr of arranging for cat tenders at home while cruising (admiral did the arranging), I was sad but relieved when the last one, my favorite, Scupper, died. (We have not yet gotten others.) The cats did not like travelling on the boat (sea sickness) or in the car, and as you say--they'd add another layer of complexity on that end as well if we took 'em.:meh: I think one needs to be cautious not to let "pet issues" compromise enthusiasm toward cruising and opportunity for doing it, etc. If you get a pet you could have it for a LOOONG time. So, consider the decision carefully.

For that matter, I also don't really enjoy taking friends with kids, especially young kids under say, 10, sailing, even in protected waters such as Long Beach Harbor. The parents can't seem to relax; they're focused on the kids, etc. Kids can't sit and enjoy--attention span is too short; they're always demanding the parents' attention, etc. Not much fun for me.o_O

Going on. Boat owners may not be aware that whereas many cruising destinations allow, and even welcome, pets; others may not. The best example I have is the Channel Islands National Park and the Nature Conservancy area here off Ventura and Santa Barbara. Pets are not permitted on the northern channel islands by National Park and Conservancy rules. Although I do, occasionally, see dogs from off boats being "walked" along the beaches in the remote areas, it's basically "illegal." Sometimes those dogs are not even leashed; i.e., allowed to run free. There's been a lot of money and effort spent by a plethora of groups to restore the northern channel islands to pristine. That's what we wish for our wilderness parks and areas, isn't it? Thus, the rules should, in my opinion, be respected at all times. So if you come out there with the pet that you cannot leave at home, you should plan to keep it aboard!!:meh:

P.S. The pet rule does not apply to Santa Catalina Island, which is not a national park or the property of the Nature Conservancy.

That's why you leave the parents at home. Especially if taking your grandchildren.

Did anyone mention that having a dog on board results in more dirt and hair in the boat.. This picture was taken a few days ago.. that is wild burro poo we encountered walking up a canyon and this guy smelled like a stable that night. I suspect he might have snuck in a roll. Well worth it to have him along however..

Regarding dog shedding and rolling and smelling like a stable. Next time get a Poodle. They do not shed and usually do not roll. And do not think for a minute that a half a Poodle, Doodle-whatever, will have this roll avoidance trait.

Gus, pictured to the left, was always on our boat for the 14 years we had him. He loved sailing, almost as much as swimming. While we never liked it when the wind died, he loved it since it was his clue to dive in. We had to tie an old jib sheet to his life jacket to pull him in easier. The open transom at the back of our B321 got a lot usage!

And I'm back...promoting the small dog breed...preferably one with fur not hair, no shedding mess. Yes you have to cut them or brush them, I keep mine cut avoid the added complexity.

My dog is my buddy, my pal, my friend... I like to take my friends sailing, don't you....He's my emotional support dog, federal registration, and as such can go with me anywhere...

He likes to be with me, literally, everywhere I go he goes too... I watch him go to the bathroom, he watchs me, you know what I'm saying...We've been all over the country, he rides in the truck with me, we've slept in the truck, we've slept in hotels, apartments, homes and mom's assisted living complex...

We go to work together, he sits in the truck quietly waiting for me, an hour or two while I do supervisory stuff here and there...(none of that 8 hr shift stuff for me)...Sometimes I let him out when we get to the site...the guys say "the 'supervisor' is here" referring to the little guy that walks around, don't do nothing and gets in the truck and leaves...(or maybe they're talking about me)...

He can't stand to be more than 6' away from me, people say when I leave the room, he sits at the door waiting, looking, hoping for my return.
The best part is when we go somewhere and they say "can't bring your dog in here" I pull the "emotional support" card and tell them "You let my dog in, or I'll go fricking nuts in your lobby"
Haven't been turned away yet...

And yes my dog likes to go sailing... In any weather.....Take a dog sailing today.

Squidd I totally admire your enthusiasm and loyalty!

But don't try and play that card at Isle Royale. The feds are very fond of their moose/wolf ecosystem, and pets are not even allowed in park WATERS, let alone on land. They see a pet dog while on patrol you get a nice ticket and an armed escort back into Michigan waters.

The idea is frightening. And it all could have been avoided had the child been safely at home.

Not to worry. No children were endangered in this episode... But it could have happened?

Hmmm..,no federally registered dog allowed, but they'll let a certified psychotic on the island with no emotional support.
Could be interesting...
I'll have to call ahead....

Actually I'm getting better... The voices in my head say I'm no longer psychotic.... Just unstable.

Good thing I got my dog with me...

Hmm. I'm willing to be educated here, but is there such a thing as a 'federally registered emotional support dog'??

I'm NOT talking about ADA service dogs, which are trained for specific support tasks and are licenced. Squidd I'm sure your case is different. But everyone I know who has gone down this ESD route did it so that could pay a one-time fee to some web site, get a cheap plastic card, and now their dog flys free forever.
