I've been refinishing some of the teak inside my boat. I misplaced the $30 bottle of teak cleaner I'd bought from Waste Marine, but I had a bottle of bleach around and decided to try it. It seems to have done the job just as well as that teak cleaner. Has anybody else ever tried this? While I'm on the subject: I noticed that Waste Marine charges $2.19 for one of those throwaway foam brushes that costs .89 at the Home Depot. This got me thinking about other items. For instance, is the marine varnish really so much superior to regular good quality exterior varnish? Enough to justify the price? How about caulking?

Waste Marine

Waste Marine? I like their new name. As far as some of the products they sell, it depends. I wouldn't think of using wire from anywhere but a marine store. Marine wire is tinned, wire from Radio Shack, et,el is usually not. For most everything else I shop around. Your local home stores will have the same caulk as WM and others, with perhaps 5200 being an exception, for less money. You can buy the "pink" antifreeze almost anywhere so shop for price. Engine and oil filters get from a marine store but oil can be bought anywhere usually much cheaper. Yes bleach will work on teak and is much cheaper. Don't use it straight or it'll be too harsh on the wood. Like I said, depending on what it is you're looking for, you have to shop. Mike

I use it

I use bleach for cleaning my teak prior to varnish as well - works better than any teak cleaner out there. I used Cetol on all my external and internal teak and the results have been great. Especially for exterior use - the UV protection is tough. This past winter I had a few teak items to varnish (magazine rack, paper towel holder, soap dish / toothbrush holder, etc) - instead of cetol, I decided to try clear polyurethane finish the PO of my house left behind. It worked great - has anyone ever used clear polyurethane varnish for interior wood? Rob

Polyurethane- of course

The usual use for clear polyurethane is for a furniture or woodwork finish. I use it all the time for items I build or refinish. That description fits the interior woodwork on a boat, as well. ;D

Oxalic Acid .... is a better bleach for teak than clorox.

buy it from a paint store or hardware store .... just a few $$$$ The generic term for this is 'wood bleach'. Its the very same as the bleach used in the expensive 'teak brighteners' sold in Marine supply houses. Also will bleach the tannin and iron stains from gelcoat and woven dacron sail cloth.

Now this is good info!

So the Oxalic Acid can be used on the fiberglass? Straight or with a chaser (diluted)?

Bar Keepers Helper

I use Bar Keepers Helper to clean my teak it works great. It contains oxalic acid the same ingredient in those expensive teak cleaners Waste Marine sells. Also I manage an auto parts store and I use a majority of our products for marine applications. We sell 3M products and their automotive buffing and waxing products are the same product as their marine products for about half the price.

Trisodium phosphate can be used also

In refinishing wood this is used to bleach and give it a constant color before staining. Jim S/V Java

Warning

My bottle of Oxalic acid has a warning that, if ingested, death cannot be avoided. Don't know how serious this caution is - but I keep it away from my mouth....

I thought it was Worst Marine

I was in WM last week to buy spark plugs for my tender and they wanted $4.99. Champion MSRP is $3.75 and they can be bought for $2.99 in my local hardware store. West, Waste, Worst, ..... the place sucks, is run by greedy morons and I do my best to avoid the place. Recently they decided to do their price matching only with select companies that overcharge just lake they do. Screw them when evey you can

why complain or use names

Garage sails! We buy everything at garage sails or second hand stores, if possible. Just got back from buying a zig-zag Singer 401A for sewing sails for $25. Then we hit the second hand clothing store. Bought 8 shirts, two pants, one bathing suits, and two marine raincoats for $28. And all of them are name brand from LL Bean to Tommy Hilfiger to Speedo. I just asked a friend about a magazine rack...he has em..teak, from a van he scavaged. The guy let him have the teak mag rack for a whopping $2.00 and it looks just like the one I have on my boat. Shop around! Don't complain. Buy off the net (no excuses for those not near a big city). Be happy and go sailing!! Anyone have a "Burning Sock Party" to open the season?

Burning sock party?

That's just nuts. Around here the season never ends and we need those wool socks year round to stay warm on the boat. Besides they look good under sandals when I want to dress up...PNW style snappy casual. ;-) Bob V

Teak Cleaning

Good day all, I have a Hunter 25 and I'm just in the process of cleaning my exterior Teak. As per Don Casey's book, I have had success with cleaning the Teak with a mixture of Bleach, TSP and Ajax. Looks good, I just now have to decide on choosing between using Teak Oil, Cetol, or some varnish? Cheers, Nick

nickt7......now you really did it

Now you really did it. THE FIGHT BEGINS. The best suggestion I could make is to walk the piers and look at the finishes you like best and find out what it is. Looks are very subjective. My personal opinion..... Teak oil...the easiest to apply with the least amount of protection. After a few days to a few weeks it looks like you didnt do anything to it. Cetol....in most cases it looks like pinkish-orange paint. The 'clear ' version still hides the beauty of the teak. But it does last a little longer than most varnish. Varnish...the best looking and most protection. DO NOT buy the cheap stuff. Good varnish will cost somewhere between $25 to $40 per quart. The hardest and most time consuming is the first time of which prep is the most time consuming and you already have done that. Put on at least 6 coats. That should last approximately a year to slightly longer. Every year all you have to do is to lightly sand and apply additional coats. The 2-component varnishes/urethanes are far superior and last many years. They are not worth the time and effort in most cases unless the wood is new and guaranteed of absolutely no water penetration. again, LOOK AROUND before you make up your mind. IMHO Tony B

Question on Oxalic Acid

Is Oxalic acid the active ingredient in that blue jell they sell at Waste Marine for about $9 for 6oz. to remove lime stains from fiberglass hulls.
