The diaphram type bilge pump on my 1981 Catalina 30 has stopped working. I haven't pinpointed the problem but, assuming the motor's dead, I'm wondering if I should replace the pump with the same type or go with a submersible (Rule, Atwood, etc.). They're quite a bit cheaper and seem to have adequate capacity. Any suggestions?

Submersible works for me

I have a Rule submersible on my '87 C-30 and it works great. It has a mercury float switch which makes it automatic as well. I'm not positive since it is an older model, but I think it is either a 1500 or 2000 gph size.

What I ended up doing.

Well, I checked my local West Marine and discovered a rebuild kit for the existing PAR diaphram pump which I've ordered. I decided that if it worked fine for 19 years, why switch now.
