Bilge pump replacement time.

My ancient Jabsco remote diaphragm bilge pump has stopped pumping. Motor still runs but won't take a suction.
My boat is a 1977 year production and I suspect the pump is original to the boat
Looks pretty much like this one but I can find no identifying labels on the old pump.

Since I haven't yet been able to positively ID the old pump and I have not yet pulled and disassembled the old pump to see if it is viable for a rebuild, I'm reluctant to order a rebuild kit.
Cheap enough to go with a "in-bilge' type pump but that would require a complete rewire and replumb. Not a big job but a bit of a pain in the butt.

The only time I ever really get any water in the bilge this time of year is if we get a hard, driving rain out of the North and I get rainwater ingress . Got about 2-3 inches in the bilge now and that's the most in the last 6+ months.
Not an emergency problem but it is a as soon as possible issue.

Any opinions either way on the current quality of the Jabsco pumps?

Those are pretty much the standard of the industry. I have two of them, albeit newer versions, in our boat. They do not back-syphon like the centrifugal pumps. The current model does not look quite like yours, but it's close.
Jabsco is now part of Xylem, a conglomerate. I talked to a company rep at the recent Seattle boat show and he stated that the Jabsco division had been left alone (independent) and their quality was as good as ever. I hope so.
Here is just one retail link, of many: https://www.amazon.com/Jabsco-37202...ocphy=9061080&hvtargid=pla-493396662631&psc=1

We’ve had a Jabsco 50880-1000 as a remote bilge pump for 9 seasons and it works perfectly so far. Having said that we don’t have any routine water ingress, so the only times it’s run are a few minutes per season when winterizing the potable water, a couple times we’ve had minor hose leaks, and a few test runs per year. I like the remote pump for not needing to worry about it sitting in water all the time, and because it’s a relatively strong diaphragm instead of just centrifugal.

The tiniest bit of bilge debris in either of the valves can cause it to run but not pump. I recommend opening it up and evaluating the valves and diaphragm. They may have gotten hard over time and are not working correctly.

Hey,

Since the pump isn't working you might as well disassemble it. You may find the problem is something simple like the diaphragm has torn or cracked. Replacing something like that is much cheaper and easier than replacing the entire pump. If you do need a new pump be sure to find one that has same size input and output as your current pump. Changing hoses is a real PITA.

Good luck,
Barry

Changing hoses is a real PITA.
Yes changing a bilge hose can qualify for an episode on "Dirtiest Jobs". They sit in a "devils soup of fluids" that if not belching methane can sometimes take the fingerprints off your fingers.

Still, one of the possible causes for no fluids pumping overboard may be that the hose is clogged. That pair of missing bikini panties may have found it's way into the bilge and got sucked into the hose.

Whichever way you go, be sure to calculate the lift to be sure it's sufficient. Just because a pump may be original doesn't mean it's correct. Also use smooth bore hose. My original, leaking hose was corrugated crap.
Also be sure your float switch works and you have an override on the control panel.

I pulled out the pump this morning and disassembled it. Should be an easy rebuild. Not really dirty in side but the rubber parts were almost as hard as Chinese algebra.
I'll also be replacing the rubber mounts, they're shot.
The pump was installed "right". Maybe 5' of vertical from the bottom of the the black hole that serves as my bilge to the through hull outlet. It has a pressure switch for automatic operation and can be turned on manually at the breaker panel and the hoses are good, I do not believe they are the original 1977 installed hoses.

I will say that I am not a fan of Defender's new website. I'm also disapointed that my order history and wish list data is gone.

I'm with you on this. There are lots of pretty pictures but no filters. I was looking for a battery and could not figure out how filter for size or chemistry, instead I got a couple of pages of batteries to scroll through to find what I was looking for. In addition the old orders, the wish list did not make it to the new site.

The one positive is shipping is now free on orders over $99.

jabsco bought out PAR pumps. it's the old PAR design. a rebuild kit is easy peezzy. i have three PAR pumps on aeolus. two 1966. carry rebuild kits for all three. run strainers on the bilge unit. one pump is rebranded for my 1974 mansfield vacuflush head. it has a different bellows with no pin hole as it just pumps air out of the holding tank. my old pumps have a belt drive.

always carry spares when sailing in the wild. on old boats

back in the 60's a replacement, american made, motor cost $6.00. prolly $200.00ish today.

I just finished this little issue. I contacted customer support and he said to email him fours pics and he could tell me what model I had. Worked out well. I had a bunch of black crap mixed with the inlet valve. Leaned it out and replaced the hoses. I left the end of the inlet hose about 6” up from the bottom..

You mean this random "capacity" slider with no numbers or indication of scale isn't helpful??? :banghead:

I hadn't noticed the loss of order history until now. That's pretty awful.

Defender has always been my vendor of choice as their prices were consistently better than other chandleries. However, when searching for information on a shift lever (see other thread) I noticed that West Marine had a much lower price by about $60.

Interesting, just now I see there are filters on the battery page and depending on how I get to the battery page I get different filters. Search for batteries and I get one set of filters. Go to the battery page from the menu and I get a different set of filters.

The President of Defender frequents SBO. He was here this afternoon. Perhaps someone should start New Defender feedback thread. I probably shouldn't be the one to do that.

Did Defender get bought out or otherwise change hands last year?
Defender has been my first and usually last place to go for boat stuff for almost a decade. Had their website been this much of a pain in the butt when I first started using them I probably wouldn't have.

A Canadian company purchased Defender last year about this time.
