Bilge hose

Look for thruhulls high above the waterline.. I'm guessing it exits out the side to minimize the length of the run. I don't understand why there is so much surplus hose at the pump though

I put the bilge pump in there temporarily to pump out the water, the old hose cracked when I went to put the bilge pump in. I am wanting to replace the hose and then install the pump permanently. The schematics in the hunter manual seems to indicate its coming from the ice box? But I'm having trouble finding where that begins.

I'm replacing the floor but need to fix this beforehand.
About a gallon of water collects in the bottom

Usually a bilge pump has it's own discharge located above the water line. I've heard of boat discharging a bilge pump through the sink drain although I think that is usually an owner modification. I wouldn't a good modification since sink grey water could find it's way to the bilge and create odors. You would need a one way valve near the sink which would reduce the efficiency of the pump and be subject to clogging.
Putting in a thru hull above the water line is not that difficult. So the question becomes "Where do you want the discharge to be?"
Since you want a short run, why not run the hose into the settee locker and up to a thru hull?
That sump looks like a good place for the pump. Think several times before securing the pump with screws. I've seen the suggestion of gluing a piece of wood to the bottom and screwing the pump into that, on this forum.

So does that mean the hose is there to send any melted ice or water from the icebox? If I put a pump there and attach it to that hose, am I just pumping water back into the icebox?

It's possible your boat didn't have a bilge pump. I had an old O'Day 23 with no bilge pump. I used a dingy style hand pump occasionally to pump any bilge water into the cockpit.

Tom J may be right as I'm not seeing any limber holes between the two bilge compartments. I do see holes, through what looks like a stinger, where there are wires running through. Besides the fact that it is not a good idea to run electrical wires through the bilge, one of those holes looks like it was drilled though after the bilge was painted as there looks like rub marks made by a drill bit next to the hole. I would be concerned with that as if there is wood inside that stringer that has not been sealed there could be rotted wood in there . Not being familiar with this boat the lack of limber holes may be one clue in figuring out if this boat was manufactured with a bilge pump. I would look to see if there is a switch in the electric panel that looks like it came with the boat. If there is any part of the old cracked hose you mention you could push an electrical snake through it or blow air through it to locate where it discharges.

Was there a bilge pump connected when you bought the boat? Or did you connect it to the hose?

Thanks for all the help, duh me the hose that is pictured was connected to the icebox so I had connected the bilge pump to it basically pumping the water into the icebox so now I just need to install the bilge pump and run the hose out to somewhere. May not even need to if I can figure out where the hell the waters coming in from. I know there's some water dripping from the top of the companionway. Supposed to rain tomorrow so I'll be there looking for boats always a challenge
Thanks for all the replies.

Hello everyone, I have 1985 Hunter 285 sailboat and was wondering If anyone spliced the shielded poly tubing that is used in the bilge pump discharge line. My discharge hose (1 inch shielded -see picture) line from the bilge pump broke off just where it goes under the floor from the bilge pump. I was wondering if you have ever spliced this discharge tubing or replaced it. Apparently, the tubing has a steel coil spiraling (called shielding) through out the poly tubing and I was going to try splice it at the location where it broke off. I was hoping to lift up the flooring on the port side and pull out the tubing and splice a new section using a plastic barb. Because of where it broke off, it is inaccessible to splice and put hose clamps from the bilge.
In looking at my pictures from when I had the old floor removed, I noticed that the bilge pump discharge tubing was routed slightly forwarded of the bilge area through a hole in the fiberglass stringer/support. Looking at the plumbing diagram, I think it is routed underneath the fiberglass shell back towards the galley and then comes through the port hull above the stove area. If you replaced any part of this tubing, I would be certainly interested in how your routed the new tubing or if you spliced it.

This happened to me,found out the hose led to the icebox.
I took a connection joint

For the lack of a better term and used a couple of hose clamps. Picture attached

If this helps, here is the plumbing diagram for the 285 Hunter. The bilge pump discharge tubing goes to a through hull fitting above the waterline just above the galley stove area. My bilge hose had cracked right near the bilge area and I am in the process of trying to splice the tubing line. Hunter did not make the routing of the tubing very customer friendly. Other than near the bilge area, it is routed under the interior pan. Hunter routed this tubing on my boat from the bilge pump under the sole through a small hole pentrating the interior pan and then back towards the galley. I believe that once under the interior pan, the tubing goes back towards the galley and then comes up the port side and then through the port side hull penetration. By chance, is that splice connector that you used on the white hose, called a barb connector? Do you know if it was a plastic connector?

Mine was on a 86 Hunter 25.5 and after much of a challenge I checked the ice box and it was the overflow pipe for water out of the box and into the bilge I used a plastic connector and clamps, but unless you use the icebox it really hasn't much revelance. It is a wire / plastic hose.
Hope this helps
