Best toaster to use with an alcohol stove

One of the other things I learned over the years is that shoelaces should be a reef (or square) knot not a granny knot. Accordingly, I don't do the "thru the loop" method, but rather make loops of both ends (after the first single one) and tie it as if I was making a reef knot on something on the boat.
:) back in the fifty's when I was learning to tie my shoes no one ever said anything about that. I'm embarrassed to say that I didn't figure it out until a couple / few years ago. It was a revelation. It makes sense and certainly works better!

Now, so as not to completely hijack the thread, we prefer this toaster.

It works well for a slice at a time and is very compact.

Good question..

There is a TED talk that explains we have been doing it wrong.:

He obviously did not have a good mama. No self-respecting mamma would teach her boy to tie a granny bow. If you cannot learn a square bow, stick to Velcro.

Right over left - left over right.

Based on reviews by boaters on other websites, I think I shall try one. Thanks for the suggestion.

In fact, this whole thread could have been avoided by asking Google for "boat toaster review" ;)

Wait, if we only relied on Google searches (DuckDuckGo doesn't track searches) and never talked about important stuff like onboard toasters, Google would come back empty handed.

I asked ChatGPT for recommendations, since it should be smarter than a simple search engine like Google. Here's what it said:

Toasters used on a sailboat with an alcohol stove need to be practical, compact, and durable. Here are a few options that might work well:

  1. Campfire Toasters: These are specifically designed for camping and boating. They are often simple metal racks that fit over a stove's burners and can toast bread or other items by holding them close to the heat source. They're portable and can be adjusted to fit different stove sizes.
  2. Toastess TST-1: This is a compact, portable toaster designed for use on boats and RVs. It operates using a low heat source and can fit conveniently in small spaces. It’s built to handle the vibration and movement of a boat.
  3. Toaster Bags: These are reusable, non-stick bags that you can use to toast bread or even cook small items directly on the stove. You place the bread inside the bag, then hold or place the bag near the heat source. They are easy to clean and store.
  4. Compact Two-Slice Toasters: If space allows, a compact toaster specifically designed for RVs or boats can work. Look for models with a durable design and a low wattage to be compatible with the low heat output of an alcohol stove.
  5. Skillet or Pan Toasting: While not a toaster per se, using a small skillet or frying pan to toast bread on the stove can be an effective and versatile solution. Just preheat the pan and place the bread on it, flipping as needed for even toasting.
When choosing a toaster for a sailboat, consider its size, ease of use, and durability, especially under the conditions of a moving boat.

Google searching IMO has become a term like Kleenex... Just another term for generic web search. Yes Duck Duck Go doesn't track but it uses Google for it's results.

True, but a web search should be the first place to get info. In this case it would find the exact same results as to the "best" toaster. A few pages even refer to their use with alcohol stoves.

I asked ChatGPT for recommendations, since it should be smarter than a simple search engine like Google. Here's what it said:
Smarter ? Depends on how that is defined. More complex ? Yes Consistently better results ? Nope. Traditional web search relies on the researcher to be involved in the data sifting. ChatGPT and other AI crap often screws up and gives horrible results based on aggregate data. If enough people say the world is flat, AI, at least currently, which learns on those results, would agree. Even though a knowledge of some science or just rational observation would give the correct answer. I make the case that search engines, like bing and google, switching to AI models for their main results output, is a very bad idea. It allows humans to be lazy and just believe what they are fed as opposed to being involved in the data sifting.

That ChatGPT output is why so many new websites are just full of crap AI created content. What happens when the AI is learning on AI generated content ? Blind leading the blind ?

Now... I am off to Amazon to buy that gsi folding toaster. A different brand version half the price in Canada BTW.

Why are you hijacking the thread ?;)
