When I bought my 1988 C-30 I noticed that the raw water intake strainer for my M-18 engine was simply a plastic housed meshed in-line fresh water filter element! This would be no different then the type I would install in my galley or head water system. Was this really a factory install?! Kind of weak I thought compared to the heavier brass bucket filter units I have often seen. My concern is that the filter being plastic, looks very fragile and should be replaced. Any suggestions on replacements units that are tough and reliable or has Catalina relied on this plastic unit set up over the years........ Regards Bob C-30 Atlanta

It came that way from the factory. Ours has lasted 19 years. They work. Don't worry - go sailing. Stu PS I thought about it too, but the extra plumbing can wait until I need to replace the thru hull, which is Marelon and doing just fine, thank you!
