Avalon, but the long way

We bought a C-22, unpretentious boat but nevertheless worthy of a Name. I wanted to call it "Bob", a short name for a short boat, unpretentious, and bobbing up and down. Wifey agreed but really, didn't. She suggested Avalon, a sort of Celtic Valhalla, in keeping with our common roots. I said OK, but it's boring. So. We have named the boat "Avalon.--the boat, formerly known as Bob".

Cracklin' Rose

We named our boat "Cracklin Rose" after the Neil Diamond song. If you listen to the words, Cracklin' Rose was a "poor man's lady". That just seemed to fit for us.

Kokopelli - The God of Good Times and

Party (also fertility but we don't talk about that - we're too old). Kokopelli was the Napi Indian God who visited in the spring, partied hard and left the girls pregnant and the crop blessed. His flute played the music to party and he had a sack on his back full of 'seeds'

Best Boat Name Contest

As a kid growing up in RI and living on Narragansett Bay in the 40's and 50's and way before TV, I lived my sailing experiences through National Geographic magazine and the exploits of Irving Johnson on his boat named "Yankee". I had a vivid imagination and actually could see myself on the deck of his boat as it traveled over the oceans of the world on the pages of National Geographic. Every boat I've owned has carried the name "Yankee". Every time I get a new boat, even high speed jet boats (which is as far as you can get from sailing),I think of changing the name to something else but I never do. Irving Johnsons boat - actually 2 of them - were replicated in San Pedro, Ca last year and a thrill for me was to spend a few hours helping build them. All I did was haul lumber and other gopher jobs but it still was a thrill. My next challange is to be able to actually sail on one of them.

In Spanish, Cuesta (La Cuesta, actually) means uphill or something like it. By repl;acing the C with a Q, it becomes more pronounceable.

This name contest

strikes me as being somewhat like a People magazine "Sexiest Man" tabulation. By whose standards? Many of the names listed are terrific, and most are at least interesting. What is a clever play on words to one guy is a cutesy-pie label to another. Some are beautifully symbolic or evocative, others just simple but meaningful to their owners. I have always enjoyed boat owners' explanations of the names they chose, but who is to say which is the "best," any more than which color is best or which boat is best? If popular vote is the ultimate judge, then the Catalina 22 is the best cruising sailboat ever made.
