This week's quiz on boat names has been the most popular quiz we've ever run, based on the participation in the discussion. Gary suggested we have some more fun with this so here we go: Based on the boat name discussion thread (see link below), vote for the name you like best. We'll factor in the votes and pick a winner next week... who will receive a pair of polo shirts bearing the winning name. Now don't cheat and vote for yourself a bunch of times -- we can see when you do that. but do have some fun with this fascinating collection of names. So scan the thread and get out the vote!

Nobody You Know

Not the name of our vessel, but I saw it one time. I've always thought for a port to port cruiser that it was good Among others I would vote for "Busted Flush" (see Travis McGee novel series for the full meaning) and of course "Top Secret" has special meanings for our boat.

"Tiramisu" gets my vote

It's short, the meaning rings true and it sounds good when you say it. It's also easy to say, is spelled like it sounds and is hard to misunderstand when you hear it on the VHF. OK, so I love Italian food too but who doesn't?? Peter H23 "Raven" (I kept the name)

Aegis-Guidedance and Protection

When Sharon and I bought our 33' boat it was named "Wye Knot". Not knowing the meaning and not really caring for the name we enlisted the help of our son and daughter in law, who both happen to be MFA Grads in creative writing. Well after much research and discussion we settled on "Aegis". The Aegis was the protective shield of Zuese. We thought what could be a better name for a sailboat? Today the Aegis is synonymous with guidedance and protection, just what we wanted from our beautiful Tartan 33.

Best name

The best name I saw on a boat was when I started sailing. " YOU BOUGHT A WHAT?"

Carpe Bierem!

I really wanted to name the boat this, but the wife wouldn't be caught dead on a boat with this name (actually, probably more appropriate to a skink potter, LOL)! And the local Sheriff might like to 'visit' more often than convienient.

How We Named Our Boat

In response to your "how our boat was named" question, we submit the following account: My wife and I were recently married. We are both "senior citizens" and were previously married. My first wife of 40 years, passed away after several years of dealing with cancer. My present wife had been divorced for a number of years before we met. We try to be as active as we can in light of our ages, and are active golfers, travelers, and recently, as sailors. We discovered our mutual interest in sailing, shortly after we met. We were married on a Skaneatles charter boat named "Judge Ben Wiles" on Skaneatles Lake. We discovered our O'Day Daysailer along the road, and believing it to be a good deal, the rest is history. When it came to naming the boat, with our previous backgrounds in mind, and the idea that we were both "starting over again", we thought the most fitting name for our new nautical venture was "SECOND CHANCE".

Heeling Powers

I can't take credit for the name because it was named by the previous owner and he said it was bad luck to change the name of a boat! Besides that I love the name. For me, it reflects what affect an afternoon sail in a steady 12knot wind has on your state of mind.
