3M Adhesive remover works well and won't bother paint or varnish. Apply with rag and allow to soak in well - rub off. If it's old, use with fine scotch brite.

I've used Goo Gone with good results on duct tape residue. It smells like something that could be based on mineral spirits.

I use WD40 for sticky things like tape and price tags.
Put it on a rag and coat to let it soak a bit.

Peanut Butter for goo removal

No joke, try peanut butter. Leave it on a few minutes, maybe a bit longer, then wipe off the goo. If it doesn't work then go for the serious stuff.

I always use Goof Off. Citrus based, has a naptha smell. Works fantastic, we use it on aircraft finishes and our boat!

Xylene is the chemical you want and is available at a hardware store for less than goof Off. Goof Off is basically this chemical.

Most of the waterless hand cleaners work rather well.

You are in luck. Louisiana still allows sale of this product. http://www.amazon.com/Xim-44012-Gon-Cleaner-Quart/dp/B000J4ZUWA Definitely the easy way to get the glue residue off without mechanical effort. Forget the Scotch Brite pad which can scratch your gelcoat.

It doesn't require any effort with Gon to get old adhesive off gelcoat. I used it to remove 2 year old heavy duty duck tape residue which Goo Gone and others had trouble with. It was very easy to get it off with GON. (Mineral Spirits, Xylene, and Tolulene, need I say more.) Just be careful and use outdoors in a well ventilated area. Dispose of the rags carefully by putting them in a water filled can.

I've always used eucalyptus oil for removing sticky residue. Cheap and very effective. Smells great too. Why should the koalas have all the fun

i use acetone. it wont hurt the sealant but there will be a need to rewax after use. if you wax your boat. i find acetone priceless -- is necessary in boat repairs and cleanup.
so are mineral spirits and certain oils.

I am with "Z". Always use acetone in a well ventilated area and put it on a rag (never pour directly on gelcoat).
