My new to me First 38 has a BEN compass with no visible screws holding it on. I would like to inspect/lube etc the wheel shaft bearings . Does anyone know the best way to remove the compass?
On most pedestals if you remove the 2 screws holding the compass light it allows the removal of the stainless cover which will expose compass mounting.
Please search for post titled "Need Help Refitting mid-1980s GOIOT Steering System" started on Sept 23, 2014 in the Ask All Sailors forum. Post # 9 & 10 explain how to remove the BEN (French manufacturer “Bianchetti Electronique Nautique”) Marco Polo Compass from the GOIOT binnacle.
If its a Plastimo compass, the srews are under the kidney shaped inserts on the perimeter of the compass. Pop them off with a thin blade (carefully) and you will find the screws.
