Sailors, I just wanted to share with you some of the damage caused by high winds at our quaint little sailing club in North West Arkansas. Sometime during the early morning hours of May 23, 2005, storm winds marched down the cove causing significant damage to many boats. Several sails and bimini's were damaged in the winds. The most substantial damage was caused when dock 4 broke loose from the "sea anchor" and crashed into dock 5. Subsequently, the power lines and poles were pulled down to docks 4 and 5. The ramp to dock 5 also sustained heavy damage. Photos can be seen here http://www.beaverlakesailclub.com/storm/storm.htm

Michael,

One thing I noticed in many of the pictures is that the furlers unfurled. Not only causing sail damage but adding to the loads that not only the boats but the docks had to sustain. My dad use to live in Ft. Lauderdale and had docks in his back yard. He had to deal with ruined sails often because the sails were not tied off. When furled, I tie about a three foot length of line around my furled sail just in case the furling line gets loose and the min. 2 wraps of jib sheet gets loose. This is just a thought and would not have stopped the damage you have posted. Hope that your boat was not in this mess. r.w.landau

Agreed

RW Thanks for your reply. I agree with you. Having the sails unfurl added to the overall stress on the docks. Michael

Michael...I keep my boat at Tenkiller, and was there when the storm blew through. We had very moderate wind and no damage. Go figure.

BLSC was former home ...

... of my h23. Beautiful place, nice people, very helpful. The day I was there someone pulled in with a pickup load of scrap teak, and some scouts were building a barbecue, I believe it was. Seemed a very industrious sailing club and we can imagine all the hard work that will be done this weekend. I hope Mr. Speer's new boat made it OK. I'll always have a warm spot in my heart for BLSC. That September Saturday morning in '03, picking up my boat, was one of the most exciting times of my life. I'm sure every sailboat owner has had a similar experience. Mac SV Boodle (nee Molly B)

How about Andy?

Unbelieveable! That a wind could get down into that little cove and do that kind of damage. Was Andy Fall's boat damaged do you know? We assisted in a very minor way with last year's regatta that Andy wrote me about. My daughter has a ski boat down at Praire Creek and they did not mention a storm.
