Great video. Thanks, Jack. That's exactly how I explain the concept to my sailing students but, by seeing how it all comes together in the video I'm sure it would make more sense to them. They can get so overwhelmed by everything and with the added excitement of actually sailing the boat I sometimes think they only hear every other word, anyway.

Roland's 100% on target, regarding shared experiences. Here's what most students and newbies hear during training dialog: Let's consider putting up the mainsail (blah, blah, blah), and then the jib, (blah, blah, blah), the physics of the wind, (yadda, yadda, yadda), on the bow into the wind (bezinga, bezinga, bezinga) and getting the hell out (hubba, hubba, hubba) of this windless Marina. Oh yeah don't forget about your safety (wah, wah, wah) stuff. Less than every other word learned. Practice is the only way to legimately experience the thrill of fuel-less boating.

Yep, and we all know as skippers, FUN on a sailing craft = respect, trust, friendship, and ultimately Love (if we let it) for the person in charge of control. It's the closest I've been to a chick magnet in decades, and I'm totally secure in the relationship with my admiral. She loves me more now with a hint of danger in our lives. Her friends think we "rock" as geezers and line up for a mini-cruise each weekend. Thanks for the reinforcement JD!

You have to get to know your students, first. If they are mathematically inclined, it makes more sense to them. Otherwise, it's a bunch of gibberish. My first mate, bless her heart, loves sailing but doesn't get the physics of it. She can hold a course, tack, and jibe, and knows the lingo but beyond that I may as well be talking in a foreign language. That's OK. I know she can, at least, heave to or turn around to come back and get me if I should become separated from the boat and she knows how to use the VHF. She is, also, asking questions all the time which endears me to her all the more. I have got to show her that video.

Sounds like she needs a promotion or recognition from FIRST MATE to PERFECT MATE! My woman, although well behaved at the helm is a toiled mess on the lines, but she is my Admiral and Perfect Mate. She'll even ride the bosons chair to rethread a flag halyard, unfortunately she wants to mess around when aloft. Apparently this is a way to beat the heat, especially in the marina, in New York as well.

beat the heat: 1) wet down the whole cockpit with water, including bimini, dodger, people and dog. 2) sit on wet towels on wetted down cockpit seats. 3) turn on clip - on 12v fan on dodger frame and adjust so it blows air back onto all cockpit occupants including dog, who always hogs the spot closest to the fan. . 4) spend the day swimming off transom and reading in cockpit, with zero natural wind and 98 degrees outside temp, which allows an excuse for not finishing the install of the new LED water level monitoring system inside the boat where it is 102 degrees .

5:30 am coffee and newspaper run, car shows 81 degrees. To marina 8:30 am to do some rubbing compound scratch repairs,soaked through to the skin by 9:00am. Marina usually abuzz by now is a ghost town. Rest of the day hibernating in the basement, Mr Carrier running full throttle all day....

The heat is miserable. Talked to some buddies in Mpls (my home town) and they are dying. Not used to this heat and where I am, Michigan isn't any better. Think I will start another thread about AC's in boats. I know there are a 1000 already but just want to see what other people have done with a portable AC units. One came with my boat however it's just too big. Need to find a smaller one. Thinking about buying the small profile Frigidaire for the companionway.

Move to South Carolina. There's no such thing as an air conditioner that's too big.

We had a summer about five years ago where it was routinely in the mid to high nineties and even over 100 during the day, so we had a number of evenings like this. Unfortunately, this year our mid summer heat is not being followed by an evening breeze at all, so we have not sailed in three weeks. Ordinarily, my wife and I count on one or two after dinner outings per week.

And I'm keeping my mouth shut about the teak; would rather maintain relationships with friends sailing the boat than with a substance that so stubbornly rejects my affections.

I would like to interrupt this gam to note that the high temperature for your countrymen in Helmand, Afghanistan today will be over 110 degrees in the freaking shade, and about the same in Mosul, Iraq!

On the other hand, I named my little 16 ft Wahoo, "Zombie Plan," because the kids would love the name! We get more comments, smiles, and waves for that name!
Ok. The kids still don't really like the boat... even wakeboarding and kneeboarding are too boring.

Seems they would rather play Pokemon Go!
Ugh! Oh well, my wife and I get lots of use of it on windless days! The little boat creates its own wind and cools us off!
