Isn't that where the flavor comes from?
Otherwise after scraping, a Brillo pad with soap helps a lot. Sometimes followed by spray on EZ Off oven cleaner.

Be careful using those cheap brushes with the metal bristles, I hear some may fall out and contaminate the food. Burn the stuff off and scrape it.

"Bar Keepers Friend" in powder or now soft squeeze. Scrape the big pieces off first. Then go to town with a kitchen sponge. Really burnt goo, put a little "Bar Keep" on and dampen. Let soak then sponge/rinse off.
ALL SHINY AGAIN

Spill the beans? In the inside I just clean the grill rack by scraping with a cleaning stone and then wipe it clean with a rag. For the outside I just cover it up after it cools down. As far as the cover I will replace it periodically. As you can see I do not do much and my grill looks no worse than most I have seen. Have you tried cleaning burnt grease off stainless steel? It requires time, dedication, patience, lots of elbow grease and an abrasive cleaner. Fail to do it one time and you get so far behind you do not want to do it again. It takes a while for the inside of the lid and the rack to get cured and to produce that good taste and you do not want to interrupt the process by scrapping it clean.

I have heard of a couple of incidents where persons have ingested the bristles ending up requiring surgery to stop life threatening infections. A cleaning stone is a lot safer.
